There are many expats that live in China who do not bring their families. And many times, families will follow 6 -12 months behind because of the hassle of moving internationally. Moving is a pain no matter what but when you have to ship things to a foreign country it become a nightmare. Also if his contract is a short one 2-3 years, he may have decided that it is best for his family to stay where they are and have stability of being surrounded by the things they know. Unless a child is fluent in Mandarin or very young, the only choice you have are the international schools and they are very expensive (along the lines of college tuition in the US... at a private college). Then you have to get the visa and residence permits and the ease of this that depends on your nationality. While this is probably easier for the likes of Drogba and Anelka, it is still a time consuming and lengthy process. It is a huge decision to uproot your family and move them to a country that they don't speak the language, can't read the signs, and know absolutely no one. Trust me on that one!
