Yes its because opposition managers single them out in their tactics. The big players especially lone strikers like Drogba usually will have 2 world class defenders and a holding players clogging up their space. Wide players are a bit harder to negate because they play on the fringes of the pitch.

What player on planet earth doesn't show up in big games ''sometimes''. I once upon a time seen Messi not show up in a Championsleague knock out game against Liverpool. I have seen lors of games were Ronaldo and Henry have not played very well in big games, these guys are human deal with it.

You must understand that most players are SOMETIMES not going to perform to the best of their ability in big games its because football players are human at the end of the day.
