Chelsea boss Avram Grant has thrown his hat into an already crowded ring of managers interested in Dinamo Zagreb star Luka Modric. His £20m price-tag put off the Blues in January, but they could be planning a summer swoop. The Blues hope that the ‘Webster Ruling’, which enables players under the age of 28 to buy out their contract after four years at a club, will come to their aid. Modric is known to covet a move to Barcelona and claimed to have snubbed a possible move to Arsenal previously. Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Newcastle United were monitoring the situation last month before agent Zdravko Mamic - also Dinamo Zagreb’s executive vice-president - deemed Modric not for sale. The player signed an unprecedented 10-year contract at Zagreb late last year, in order to inflate his transfer value. However, Andy Webster’s infamous Fifa article 17 could mean that Modric could buy out his remaining contract for £1.5 next January. With that in mind, Chelsea’s possible £10m bid in the summer could be reluctantly accepted by the Croatian club. Chelsea are yet to make contact with the 22-year-old midfield ace. Sources suggest that Grant’s confidante Giovanni Rosso, a Croatian who spent time with Grant in Israel, has sounded out Modric on behalf of the London club. Goal.com UK

Chelsea lead the chasing pack for Palermo striker Amauri. Blues boss Avram Grant failed with a £15million bid for the Palermo top scorer last month. But he is set to beat Juventus to the 27-year-old, who will soon qualify for a European Union passport. Amauri has eight Serie A goals this season, and six years' top-flight experience in Italy with Napoli, Chievo and Palermo. "I can confirm that Amauri will leave Palermo this summer," said his agent Mariano Grimaldi. "He is due to become an EU citizen shortly, and that could open up the English stage to him. "He will be playing Champions League football next season - that is for certain." Daily Mirror

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has reopened his row with Manchester United - claiming the Reds tried to wreck his career. United eventually sold Mikel to Chelsea after a drawn-out row over his original transfer from Lyn and the Nigeria midfielder told the News of the World: "All United were after was money. I didn't see why they wanted to wreck my career. "The thing is, I didn't know the reason why United had to drag the whole thing out. It didn't make any sense. "FIFA didn't let me train with either team so I was training alone in my neighbourhood. "But Chelsea fought for me and when people do things like that, it's difficult to abandon them. "That's why I'll be at Chelsea for a very long time."

New Chelsea signing Branislav Ivanovic admits Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic inspired him about cracking the Premiership. He said: "I've followed most of his matches. A conversation with him would be helpful so he can give me good advice. "I'll also tell him I've signed for the best team in the Premier League! "When I got the offer from Chelsea it was like a dream come true. "They will see the best of me. I've been training on my own since the Russian season broke off a month ago. It's up to me to raise my level to the others' standard."

Chelsea boss Avram Grant believes Claude Makelele can get even better. The manager said: "I think Makelele could even be getting better. He is a special guy. I told him at the beginning I didn't know how many games he would play but he had to be there when we needed him. "And when we have, like at Valencia, at Everton and many others, he was there. He has a lot of experience and is good for the squad. Even when he doesn't play he is good to have around because he has a very good influence." Tribalfootball

Joe Cole wants to play out his career at Chelsea. The 26-year-old will make his 200th appearance for the Blues if selected against Wigan in the FA Cup on Saturday. And Cole, who has earned 47 England caps, has admitted the honour he feels in playing for Chelsea. Cole has won two Premier League titles with the Blues since moving to Stamford Bridge from West Ham in 2003 and he is keen to repeat that success. "It's a great honour, and if I could pause time and just play, I'd play for Chelsea forever," Cole told Chelsea's official website. "It goes too quickly. I just want to keep playing, keep winning things and enjoy it as much as I can. "There are so many happy times and hopefully I get a few more appearances under my belt too."
