I said this about 10 or 20 pages back, but Torres was essential to our squad down the stretch last season. He did not contribute the way we had expected, but he really did make a massive impact in both CL and FA Cup play. He had three goals and four assists in the Champions League. We all know that this is not enough, but it was significant. His goal at the Camp Nou could have saved our Champions League dreams; I'm sure most of us watching had a sickening feeling that Barcelona were going to score at the last moment. He relieved all of those fears with a cool finish, rounding poor Victor Valdes. His crucial assist against Benfica was also important, providing a crucial away goal with a great pass to a charging Salomon Kalou. We won the tie 3-1 on aggregate, needing a late Meireles screamer to settle it. At risk for being a bit underwhelming, it is worth being mentioned that did win us the corner that lead to Didier Drogba's game-saving header in the Champions League Final. It was the ONLY corner Chelsea had all 88 minutes. He came on as a substitute and, whatever way he could in our system, made a massive impact. (I also personally think he had appeals for a penalty) He showed intense determination when he showed his frustration (when not being picked in the first 5 penalty takers). It may be a bit disrespectful to RDM, but he is showing the fire he had in his Liverpool days. Whether or not he's a "£50m player," he made a significant impact on our successful Champions League and FA Cup runs and I think Fernando Torres deserves some credit. I'm very pleased for him and I actually back him to succeed here next season. With Mata, Hazard and Hulk behind him pulling the strings, we may yet see our #9 be the success we dreamed of.
