I love how he always closes the angle for the winger so they can't just cross the ball in but have to go past him which is very difficult. The contrast is particularly stark when looking at our other side.

Counter attacking at least gives us an opportunity to kill the game. Just kicking the ball back the opposition wherever it is on the pitch, however, doesn't and is clearly not the way to go.

Those are all one-off incidents. Us sitting back on a one-goal lead and almost (or actually) conceding has been occuring a lot this season and is concerning.

Jose said something about him playing through a hamstring injury. He's kind of the opposite to Luiz who (for us at least) was a beast in the big games but poor against smaller teams.

So good in what way? Defensively he just backs off and off and lets anyone glide past him or cross the ball in. He also dived when his back was barely touched and stayed down when we needed him to actually defend. It's no surprise that we were a lot stronger defensively on Azpi's side and he did more going forward in the end as well.

Well imagine how much better he could be on the right side. Offers more defensively than Ivanovic and offensively there wouldn't be that much difference.

Especially when coupled with the low defensive block. We're lucky they're so bad.

It's poor for his standards to be honest. He is world class in many attributes but his finishing is very average.

Matic pressing high + Fabregas not being very good defensively + low defensive block = recipe for disaster.

Look at the goals we've conceded and you'll see in many cases Ivanovic does something amateurish like loses track of his man. He doesn't make very obvious mistakes like scoring own goals which is probably why many don't notice it (although they all do with Luis for some reason). Maribor should have made it 2-0 yesterday because guess who switched off? Ivanovic. Yes Luis didn't close their player down quickly enough for the first goal, admitted, and he was soon subbed off and will probably be dropped for the weekend. Harsh considering Ivanovic also didn't close their player down quickly enough for the initial cross and he gets away with crap like that and worse every game. Who was responsible for City's equaliser, United's equaliser (sending off was harsh but when you tell a ref like Dowd to 'fuck off' all the time, what do you expect?) Everton's second, Schalke's equaliser, Arsenal's 1v1s that they really should have scored from, QPR's equaliser, the chance Maribor had to make it 2-0, etc.? Those are only the ones I remember off the top of my head - there's bound to have been plenty more: just watch him closely in a game - and while Ivanovic isn't the only one to blame in these examples with Schurrle, Cahill and Courtois also at fault in some cases, would Azpi have made as many mistakes as Ivanovic has? No chance.
