Spike 12,049
What exactly are your needs? If you just need a computer to perform basic functions like Web surfing or word processing, it might be hard to justify buying a Mac. There are plenty of PC choices out there that are less expensive. The relative value of a Mac or PC really depends on the consumer's needs. For many, software development has to be done in a powerful desktop machine, and that might be true if what you are developing requires it. However, if you are a software developer building web apps or phone apps then you don’t really need that much hardware power. Macs do seem popular with the trendy people, but I don't think they are appropriate for everybody. For example, AutoCAD doesn't run on a Mac, so if you were going to do engineering or drafting or any other program that included the use of AutoCAD, I say go with a PC. And remember, you’ll probably end up using the laptop for things other than software development, you should also consider getting a laptop that you’ll enjoy even when not coding, and more importantly, a laptop with a great keyboard, you’ll do a lot of typing! You see I have a PC for a lot of those things and it seems like a waste buying a Windows Laptop when I already have desktop PC. There is less incentive for me to use it given that I have a superior machine just sitting in my room. If I get a PC laptop I'm liable to nuke it and install Ubuntu...I don't care if it's trendy or not.
Rmpr 8,977
As a Uni student won't Apple give me a discount? They used to, now they just give you 100 dollars to spend at their Apple Store.... Spike
Steve 10,227
The 15" is a bit beyond my price range. I would prefer under 1500. It's not that I can't afford it, I just need to be a savvy consumer.I was thinking a "13 with a 128GB SSD whilst just using a portable HDD.I'm only first year at Uni and we have been mostly using Python and whatnot (the tutor uses a Mac). Even if I can't use my laptop, I always have my PC at home.As a Uni student won't Apple give me a discount?Yes they will give you 10% off depending on which uni you're at. But if you do a custom build they might not depending on the parts. Also you may not need the i7 unless you intend on doing video editing. It won't really help much for basic use but anything with rendering involved it will be handy. For example if you use flash and a file is rendering the i7 will help alot. Something for you too consider. If you want to put a bigger ssd, just buy it separately and put it in yourself, then buy an external case and put in the hard drive from the mac into the case. I've no connections, I just moved to Brisbane! I might be able to get you discount on stuff but you will have to say you know someone who works in vic and they sent me in and they will give you discount. If they say they want to call me shoot me a message on here and i'll give you my work info so they can look me up.
