Police evacuate Soho.

Police have shut down London’s LGBT+ district of Soho because someone has found a suspected World War II bomb.

The discovery at a building site near Dean Street in the heat of Soho was made at around 1.42pm today (3 February).

There is a cordon in place between Oxford Street, Charing Cross Road and Shaftesbury Avenue.

Cancellations, closures and shutdowns

Many businesses have been forced to close their doors. And hundreds of workers spilled out onto the street as offices shut down.

These include the area’s well known LGBT+ bars and Dean Street sexual health services.

Meanwhile theatres have cancelled their shows or are set to do so.

Police removed people from Old Compton Street, the UK’s most famous gay neighborhood, lined with LGBT+ bars and mainstream businesses.

The ‘suspected ordinance’ is near the Soho Hotel.

Update

Soho Police have now announced that the cordon has been scaled back. It is now focused on the area around Dean Street.

The roads closed are:

Dean Street at junction with Old Compton Street and the junction with Carlisle Place and Bateman Street.
Bateman Street at junction with Frith Street.
Meard Street at junction with Wardour Street.
St Annes Court at junction with Wardour Street.

All other closures have been lifted.

However, Soho Police warned: ‘At this time it is not known when the new smaller closure area will be lifted. However these roads will remain closed for the duration of this incident.’

Meanwhile, businesses which are outside the new smaller cordon are starting to open again.

More follows.

Nike Space Hippie 01, 02, 03 & 04

https://eukicks.com/2020/02/05/nike-space-hippie-01-02-03-04/

Space Hippie, an exploratory footwear collection constructed with Nike’s own “space junk,” transforms scrap material from factory floors into a radical expression of circular design. Every detail of the four initial Space Hippie silhouettes, from material choices to methods of make to packaging, was chosen with consideration for its environmental impact.

With Nike Space Hippie, the urgency of climate change is met by a bold step to reimagine solutions to critical environmental problems. The result is the creation of Nike footwear with our lowest carbon footprint scores ever.

“Space Hippie product presents itself as an artifact from the future. It’s avant garde; it’s rebelliously optimistic,” says John Hoke, Nike Chief Design Officer. “Space Hippie is also an idea. It is about figuring out how to make the most with the least material, the least energy and the least carbon.”

The product has purpose, but doesn’t veer from Nike’s legacy of goosebump-inducing design. It is a barometer of progress, presenting new ideas to deal with waste and turning trash into something beautiful.

“I’d say Space Hippie attacks the villain of trash,” says Hoke. “It’s changed the way we look at materials, it’s changed the way that we look at the aesthetics of our product. It’s changed how we approach putting product together.”

Consider Space Hippie an example of advancing human potential. New benchmarks in use of recycled content set a new bar for responsible design. It challenges convention in material sourcing. Space Hippie is about doing better for today, setting the stage for a stronger tomorrow. It drives a new vision for how things are made, used and, ultimately, reused.

“We believe the future for product will be circular,” says Seana Hannah, VP, Sustainable Innovation. “We must think about the entire process: how we design it, how we make it, how we use it, how we reuse it and how we cut out waste at every step. These are the fundamentals of a circular mindset that inform best practices.”

Space Hippie embodies the idea that designers have a right and responsibility in problem-solving. It tackles a big, complex issue with soft grace. Like a barrier-breaking run, the innovation should provide us all a healthy dose of inspiration.

The Perfect 3 Days in Tallinn, Europe’s Fast-Rising Capital of Cool

https://www.thrillist.com/travel/nation/tallinn-estonia-vacation-planner-trip-itinerary-travel-guide

Long underestimated as just another gray, post-Soviet harbour city, Tallinn’s quickly growing into one of Europe’s cool creative capitals, right up there with Berlin and Helsinki. Estonians have always been DIYers -- building, brewing, and foraging -- especially during the Soviet era when resources were scarce. Thirty years after the Iron Curtain’s collapse, that spirit of self-reliance is igniting a new hustle of artisanship and innovation in Estonia’s capital.

More and more young Estonians are moving back to join the creative wave and open their own businesses: art galleries, design shops, and avant-garde restaurants. Chefs are whipping up interesting dishes that marry the artisan skills of their ancestors with new techniques they’ve learned abroad. The result is a tasty Nordic-inspired cuisine that's a far cry from the stodgy Soviet meals of yore (and definitely more affordable than the fancy plates in other Scandinavian countries).

And then there's the beer. With more than 80 breweries in the country, Estonia rocks one of the most exciting craft beer scenes in Europe right now. Last year saw the opening of some incredibly cool cultural hotspots that are reinvigorating Tallinn's industrial waterfront. Now's the time to check it all out while it's still flying under the radar, which is why we've named Tallinn one of the 20 Best Places for a Big Trip in 2020. Read on for the best places to eat in the city, things to do, and neighborhoods to check out when you're there.

When to visit Tallinn in 2020

Tallinn’s weather is at its finest from May through September, when there’s nothing like sipping craft beer on outdoor terraces or shopping at the Telliskivi Flea Market beneath sunny rays. Sampling seasonal produce like fresh cloudberries (little orange baubles growing in cool northern climes) at the Baltic Station Market or spruce tips straight from marshland trees is just an added perk.

Summer is also when a lot of awesome festivals go down. The dog days kick off with Tallinn’s Craft Beer Weekend on the first weekend of May. We’d also totally recommend the outdoorsy Midsummer antics in late June or the Night of the Ancient Bonfires in August. The latter is an homage to when villagers would light huge bonfires to lead sailors home. These days, surrounding areas and islands around Tallinn and Estonia spend the evening getting lit. You can see the blazes up close or across the Baltic Sea -- Google Maps even marks them, so you can bonfire-hop!

AIMÉ LEON DORE & PORSCHE UNVEIL UPCOMING COLLABORATION

https://www.opumo.com/magazine/aime-leon-dore-porsche-911/

If you don’t already know, we’re partial to a custom Porsche 911. In fact, we’re partial to a Porsche 911 of any kind, but when one comes along that has the elegant Aimé Leon Dore signature stitched to the RECARO racing seats, we're all in.

Aimé Leon Dore’s combination of preppy style and contemporary streetwear has marked the New York-based label as one of the most exciting brands of the moment. That was true even before it unveiled its first campaign video in collaboration with Porsche.

After months of research at the Porsche Museum, Aimé Leon Dore and Porsche have produced a very lively restored Porsche 964 Carrera 4 911. Not only does this machine boast a roar that most prides of lions would be proud of, it’s packed with meticulous, stylish details. The interior is crafted from Schott sunflower leather and luxurious Loro Piana houndstooth wool that gives a nod to Aimé Leon Dore’s Fall/Winter 2020 collection.

While the project is riddled with references that eagle-eyed Porsche and Aimé Leon Dore fans will pick up on, our favourite is the custom badge that adorns the rear grill. The forest-green emblem epitomises the style of this collaboration – it’s timeless, iconic and brimming with class.

“The Porsche 911 is perhaps the single most iconic automobile of all time, a car whose design synthesises many of the values that connect Porsche and Aimé – simplicity, ambition, tradition, and beauty.”
Teddy Santis
Teddy Santis, the founder of Aimé Leon Dore explains why his brand fits so well with Porsche, stating that since he began the label, Porsche has played a central role in the design process of collections.
