It is an odd decision IMO but it should bring a positive response from him, maybe that is what the coach is thinking. Sometimes players get a confidence boost from being captain and it Spurs them on to better things.

Very surprised at this, I'd have thought Taiwo, Yakubu or Yobo would have been better captaincy candidates. Good for Mikel, though, it'll help his confidence immensely and possibly improve his game.

Why 'could'? Article seems pretty certain. He's a very mature player for his age, so i'm not completely surprised by that. There's other more obvious and experienced candidates as BlueLion has listed, but long term Mikel is a player who can take them forward.
