Rubber bullets 1,183
Two things I have to say1. For now on he should definitely be 1st choice for centre back for now on, when he was paired up with John Terry for the rest of last season we were solid last year, although whether to drop Carvalho or John Terry is the question, because I think Ivanovic has accostomed himself at right back. Although we have never seen Alex and Ivanovic pair up at centre back (which would be interesting), and it would defiantly allow Bosingwa to go back into RB (which he is solid at).2. I am 95% sure he will get sold this summer, regardless if he plays more or not, admittedly Carlo has kept Carvalho on the 1st 11 due to all the injuries Alex has had. But if I was him I would sure be confused why JT and Riccy keep making mistakes but still are played regularly. He may leave for Bayern Munich or Real Madrid, in my opinion. Or otherwise Inter may be an option, with Mourinho as a coach.
BlueLion. 21,491
Moving Ivanovic, a solid, no-nonsense defender into the middle will sure up the heart of the backline. Hopefully. We certainly miss Bosingwa at the minute; we've been very unfortunate with injuries to key men this season.
Steve 10,227
Bosingwa is a huge loss. As much as i like seeing Ivan play on the right i still think he will be more effective in the middle. I think Bosingwa is better at taking on a player. For example the way he cuts in through the middle of the park and gets a shot off or puts a nice ball into the box. He tends to change it up a bit instead of always going down the wing.
boshman 1,073
For me i think Ivan has made the right back position his own. He has had the chance with Bosingwa's injury and has taken it in my opinion. I agree that Alex is a fantastic defender he proved that last season when he played in Carvalho and Terry's absence. I can't see Terry being dropped and he won;t be sold in a million years. The only way he will play is if Carvalho is dropped. I have read people saying they think Riccy should be sold but I think Carvalho is a good enough defender to be in the squad at least. But at the end of the day (as the footballers say) Alex should never be sold, he is a fantastic defender and maybe one day, even next year should be part of our number 1 centre back pairing. Badboy 1,526
I don't know about alex he is so static that someone like darren bent or jermain defoe or craig bellend would destroy him. john terry is not the quickest but he can read the game, alex is mentally slow which makes him a bad reader of the game. 5354 204
Alex is not helped by his injuries and the mistakes he had on the pitch...
Blue in NY 26
I don't see why people continue to think that JT will ever be dropped, it's a ridiculous idea to me. I agree with Steve, I love the way Bran has played this year, we might be in a huge hole right now in the CL if it wasn't for him, but Bosingwa is extremely effective on the right, every bit as good as Ivanovic. I think he would be better fit for the middle as well, although it is great for us to have a utility defender. I do love Alex though, I do wish he would start alongside JT, he was unlucky to get hurt. We were in incredible form when they were partnered, and I think if he started that it would be ideal for us. I love Riccy, he's had an incredible career here, but his age is creeping up on him.
BlueLion. 21,491
Terry is not beyond dropping just because he's the captain. Ancelotti needs to show some backbone and do the right thing - remove an under-performing player from the team. Give Lampard and armband for a month and let Terry prove he's ready to get back into the starting eleven and win back the captaincy.
Steve 10,227
We dont have enough players fit to be dropping player atm.
EskWeston 696
It's a good point, i would very much like to see Alex back in the starting line up again on a regular basis, obviously injuries has been a problem for him. Also i agree with BlueLion that we miss Bosingwa, even though Ivanovic has done an excellent job, another player who i think would be prefereable in the centre back position. I am just not too comfortable with Carvalho at the moment...
