Sven Goran Eriksson is poised to dip into his famous contacts book to pull off a stunning signing for League Two Notts County before the end of the transfer window.

Eriksson, made the club's director of football after a summer takeover, has been told money will be no object to get an A-list signing from Italy or Spain.

His former Lazio player Pavel Nedved and Luis Figo are both being sounded out to see if they will make a U-turn on retirement and the clubwould also find the funds for Inter Milan's Patrick Vieira.

County want to make three high-profile signings in the next fortnight and have already offered ex-England defender Sol Campbell a mouthwatering offer to reject Premier League offers to move to Meadow Lane.

But the club's new Middle East owners, Munto Finance, also hope to sign a marquee name from Europe to show their ambition of reaching the Premier League is serious.

County were buoyed on Friday that they were able to persuade Peter Schmeichel's son, Kasper, to join them from Manchester City on a five-year deal.

Notts County are hopeful of wrapping up a sensational deal to sign former England defender Sol Campbell.

Campbell is a free agent after leaving Portsmouth in the summer and BBC Sport understands he has held "encouraging" preliminary talks with the Magpies.

The 34-year-old has been seen at Meadow Lane and it is understood he has been offered a deal by the League Two side.

Campbell, who has 73 caps, played for England under Notts director of football Sven-Goran Eriksson.

The Magpies have been linked with a host of big-name players since Eriksson arrived, including David Beckham and Dietmar Hamann.

But manager Ian McParland has looked to sign players with a proven pedigree in the lower leagues in England, with the intention of building steadily.

Signings like Lee Hughes, Luke Rodgers, Ben Davies, and Graeme Lee have helped take the Magpies to the top of the table.

However, the club have also signalled their intent to move to the next level by signing former Manchester City keeper Kasper Schmeichel.
