He does not look like a physical Cb, which might be a good thing if he's really good on the ball as well as reading of the game. Best of luck.

If he is really good on the ball but is going to really struggle physically, thats not a lot of use is it?

People tend to overlook everything now for if someone is good on the ball. Two sides to football, with and without the ball.

Hopefully being South American he has a bit of an aggressiveness about him similarly to Romero at Spurs and Martinez at United, just toned down a bit. Will help if he isn’t particularly physically well developed but he will need to improve on the physicality, there are not many good central defenders now without that side of the game.

Christensen is a skinny guy too, but he is doing quite well on the highest level of football.

Also he 18 only, we still have time to fed him with some extra oatmeal for breakfast. Look at Kompany when he was at Hamburg as a youngster, he got much more built in years at City.

True but Christensen also filled out a bit. Its not re the size for me, physically wanting to engage players is as much mental as it is physical. Get the concept, I am not saying he has to be absolutely stacked but if your a central defender and you struggle with physicality it is a big issue.

Muscle mass doesn’t always correlate with strength anyway

Again as said above, its more the aspect of if he struggles physically that is a issue for me. Does he mean that he doesn’t like engaging players in duels etc? Doesn’t like contact with players?

I think the missing piece of the puzzle here is the system. In that positional game the defenders have to be very mobile and good on the ball; pace and skill are more important than physicality as you can see City's defense line. I'm suggesting that he's very much a Maresca signing.

I used to hear the same about Stones, even though I always rated him. I could totally see Stones not doing as well in a low block direct system (say England eh), but he does a really good job for City.

But Dias, Stones, Walker, Ake, Gvardiol are all aggressive and willing to go into physical duals and can deal with that also.

Yes reading the game I get that is essential for these types of defenders but these guys also need to have that aggression and willingness to engage and compete with people physically.

I guess you can say they are all very pacy, but I don't consider them powerful... maybe Walker but he's hardly the one who stays back.
Aggression is a mental skill, not physical. Kante is full of aggression and he's a tiny guy.

My take on the D of the positional game, is that pace and skill on the ball are the new requirements. Pace for both the high line and to close down aggressively; skill on the ball is important for keeping possession from the back. That does not mean they shouldn't be able to defend, but only that there are new requirements at play.

All academic of course; he's 18 and will develop into his own player. Suppose we will find out when he returns from loan.
