Rodgers named Watford boss

Championship side Watford have named Brendan Rodgers as their new manager.

Sky Sports News revealed The Hornets were set to hand the reins to Chelsea reserve boss Rodgers and now they have confirmed his appointment, along with Frank Lampard senior - who will assist him.

The 35-year-old, whose playing career was ended by injury when he was just 20, has taken his first senior job after youth and reserve roles at Reading and Chelsea.

Rodgers will officially take charge on Tuesday after their league clash with Bristol City, with current caretaker Malky Mackay remaining in the dugout at Ashton Gate.

In a statement Watford thanked Chelsea for allowing Rodgers to leave.

"Watford Football Club would like to take this opportunity to thank Chelsea Football Club for their co-operation and professionalism during this time," read the statement.

Lampard appointment

Rodgers himself was delighted to confirm Lampard as football consultant.

"Frank is someone I have known for a little while now and our relationship came through young Frank, who I worked with at Chelsea," he said.

"Talking to the man, and being in his company, I was always very interested in what he had to say and always came away having learned something. He has some great experience.

"As a young manager and coach, to me it was very, very important to have that someone alongside me. For me, at this moment in my career, I can think of no better man.

"He is a football man, he is an honest man and he is a loyal man. When you are a young manager those are the key qualities you want in someone who is your mentor really."

Great move for him. A loss for us. He was an excellant coach and it will be hard to replace him in the reserves. I liked him a lot and so did the players. I am sure he will have a geat future in the game as a first team boss.

A very good point, Elliott. As good a coach as Rodgers is, it is clearly in his best interests to move on in the world of football management and he has landed himself a very good position at a respectable Championship side. As nice as it would be to see him stay in the Chelsea set-up, everyone has to move on eventually, and it will be a great challenge for him.
