Advisory Board Crystals x Vans EVDNT EXT ULTI “Miracle Conditions”

Vans (1966) and Advisory Board Crystals (2015) is the convergence of two California based brands centered on the sport of creativity. All work we do with Vans represents the expressive creators of the counterculture movement. Nonconforming, anti, divergent thinking; while at a glance can appear negatively charged are in fact tentpoles of everything we have explored since our inception. Counterculture informs critical thought process and when oppositional forces reach critical mass, can trigger dramatic cultural changes.

Establishing the basis of countercultures importance in this work, the conceptual thought for our first collaborative project with Vans is the exploration of the intersection of miracle conditions and the pseudoscientific effect on human consciousness. The root ideals of Abc. rest within pseudoscience art and fact. Crystals in their purest form are part of the history and base material that is planet earth. Beyond the use for industry, the artistic context of their mystical aspects always function as a guiding light of thought process and overall meaning.

As a studio favorite, fire opals, ethereal in appearance, give almost a similar internal response. Staring into the blissful abyss akin to that of a galaxy, the colors of a fire opal can take your mind to an near super conscious place. Is this what is it like to question reality?

“Your love has passed through me and now I feel my mind something like an opal, that is, full of strange uncertain hues and colors, of warm lights and quick shadows and of broken music.” James Joyce wrote this of Opals a hundred years ago and his words capture some of the truest qualities of the almost unsettling beauty of an opal.

For our first shoe collaboration with Vans, we worked on a newer model, the EVDNT. The many aspects and technical construction of this model allowed us utilize layering, transparency, and the various materials necessary to transform the shoe into an abstract adaptation representative of a fire opal. The general idea is to feel the pseudoscientific energy of what it would be to wear a fire opal on your feet. Metaphysically, this stone is an amplifier and the fire property is said to spark personal creativity. The products we set forth are centered on supporting the bodies of the most creative minds and this shoe does just that.

Technically speaking, we developed an Abc. lace lock which turns our model of the EVDNT into a slip on. We worked with the Vans team on getting the gestalt of the lace just right in order to give the perfect nuanced arch shape over the top of the foot when worn. Checkerboard suede color blocking, mesh tones, transparent holographics, opal patterns, and reflective properties all contribute to the shoes sculptural feeling. The matte silver components and custom Swarovski crystal Opal eyelets work harmoniously with the intentional chaos of a man made ‘organic’ product. We took into account every single detail of the shoe, lining the inner with a vegan leather to give a super plush feel (making these comfortable Vans was a goal) and even sewed the custom developed jelly Opal holographic fabrication cover onto the foot bed insoles to ensure the collaborative branding never wears off. You’ll find our signature pull tabs on the tongue and back heel as a functional way to slide the shoes on and off, capped off by our signature authenticity hologram on the back heels. The holographic jelly Opal fabric can also be found underneath the toecap peeking out near the 3m lacing system, and on the varying Opal graphics on both left and right shoes. We manufactured the tongue labels in italy which include a specific serial number / clg code per pair of shoes that can be verified on our website allowing for a secure way to authenticate these shoes forever.

We wanted to keep the shoebox quintessentially Vans. Using the recycled cardboard box while adding the juxtaposition of a custom collaborative holographic security seal on both sides of the box. We were lucky to get the approval to flip the iconic turtle logo to have the ‘crystals’ verbiage inside. We reoriented the bottom of the box where to holograms are to ensure no information was covered. We also designed a ‘crystals’ tissue paper and collaborative information label sticker included with each shoe.

To accompany the shoe, we designed and produced an apparel and accessory collection using our own (Abc.) factory. The concept here was to build around the shoe. If the shoe is the mined opal worn to support the bodies of “The World’s Most Creative Minds,” the apparel is there to do the same. We thought the idea of “creative mining” was interesting. A play on the concept but also reality of who these clothes are for. The person who mined for the crystal but also for the thinker who mines for thoughts, inspiration, and progress. From the psychical to the mental. Mind, body, and spirit in alignment, always. The apparel caries across aspects of the shoes including Swarovski rivets and fire opal references and graphics, along with a specially developed multilayered holographic patch. Keeping to earth tones, the pieces feel as at home working on a sculpture, coding a website, giving a lecture, or digging for crystals. Also developed was a new take on our rapper necklace, instead of crystals using synthetic fire opal to create something we’ve never seen before. Cast in a matte silver to match the components of the shoe, the opal feels almost three dimensional in day to day wear.

Puerto Rican pop and hip-hop star Bad Bunny has quickly become a go-to collaborator with the 3-Stripes over the past few years. From curing the brand’s staple Forum Buckle Low in a range of titular offerings to most recently anchoring the Campus in a collection of earth-based tones, the three-time Grammy award winner now strikes up shock drop of the heavily layered Response CL.

Following the silhouette’s most recent pitch-dark black and purple-infused collaboration, the contemporary 2000s tooling now reveals the latest hue from Benito’s color wheel; taking inspiration from the wall of bright green foliage that decorates the interior of Boston’s historic Fenway Park. Bad Bunny has held a unique connection with the East Coast city ever since the Mayor pronounced August 18th as “Bad Bunny Day” last year. In response, the richly textured composition features melted leather layers and striking suede accents that compose a living ecosystem for your feet.

The Bad Bunny x adidas Response CL “Boston Day” will release exclusively at Concepts Boston on August 18th for a retail price of $160. In the meantime, the upcoming pair can be seen below in detailed imagery.

nanamica Presents Two Understated Colorways Of The PUMA Clyde GTX

nanamica and PUMA teamed up for the very first time back in 2022, dressing the Suede VTG in two understated, weather resistant colorways. Now, almost an entire year thereafter, the Japanese label is rejoining the footwear brand to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Clyde.

In addition to PUMA, nanamica has joined forces with New Balance, Reebok, and even Converse Japan, bringing a similar approach to the brands’ respective icons. Their take on the Clyde fits right in amidst the rest of the catalog, boasting improvements beyond the usual GORE-TEX upgrade. The lace unit, for example, has been slightly reworked: alongside forgoing exterior eyelets, the eyestays have been slightly heightened to aid the shoe’s overall water resistance.

Complete with subtle co-branding along the insoles, the nanamica x PUMA Clyde GTX will be available on August 18th in both “Black” and “White.” As we await their debut, enjoy a look at both colorways via the retailer imagery added ahead.

Los Angeles based Undefeated has teamed with Casio to produce an edition of the G-SHOCK DW6900. The watch’s 2023 release comes as part of G-SHOCK celebrating its 40th anniversary.

To style the watch, Undefeated uses a milk chocolate shade of brown and then uses yellow and blue for the detailing. A second band is included with the watch, in black textile.

Melbourne based shop UP THERE has teamed with Padmore & Barnes to produce a two piece footwear collection centered around the P204 and P404. The collection will release on the 26th of August, exclusive to UP THERE, in-shop and online.

UP THERE presents their latest collaboration with Irish footwear manufacturer Padmore & Barnes.

Working together, the two have produced exclusive editions of Padmore’s most iconic styles — the P204 Shoe and P404 Boot. Inspired by UP THERE’s love of ‘90s culture, the shoes incorporate iconic cues which allude to the cult-classic models manufactured by Padmore & Barnes and adopted by New York’s rap scene. Both shoes are executed in tonal colourways with a focus on texture, elevating the brash and bold ‘90s look with a contemporary and refined edge.

This UP THERE exclusive version of the Padmore & Barnes P204 moccasin is our ode to early ‘90s rap.

The main inspiration came from Ghostface Killah’s debut solo album Ironman. The cover sees Ghostface with fellow Wu-Tang members Raekwon the Chef and Cappadonna in the lab cooking-up his signature two-tone Wallabees. Working with Padmore & Barnes (the original Wallabees manufacturer) we put our own twist on the recipe. Instead of splitting colours we split the materials. Finished in bright fuchsia, the outer is a buttery suede whilst the medial is cut from croc-embossed leather.

Aside from that we kept it pretty simple (as simple as a pink shoe can be) relying on Padmore’s 100+ years of manufacturing knowledge to do our vision justice.

UP THERE x Padmore & Barnes P404 Boot

The Yin to the fuchsia-fantastic Yang, our UP THERE P404 boot shares the same material-mixing ethos albeit executed in a more subtle way.

Rich black suede forms the bulk of the upper, with the hand-stitched vamp finished in a glistening black pony hair. From some angles you might not even catch the material difference, but you’ll know it’s there.

For the P404 we gave the classic plantation crepe the flick, substituting a blacked-out Vibram® Christy sole in its place. By using a Christy we kept the same wedge shape, gained some wet weather traction (iykyk) and dropped a bunch of weight.

Flinders St Photobooth

Founded over 50 years ago, the Flinders St photo booth is an original Melbourne icon. Owned and run by 90 year old Alan Adler, the Flinders St location is the last of the 16 booths Alan once operated across the entire city. Saved from demolition by local petitions in 2018, the booth survives as one of the last chemically processed film photobooths in the country.

Kith Classics x adidas Originals Fall 2023: Rod Laver, IL Comp & Torsion Edberg

With the Grand Slam US Open tennis tournament set to start at the end of August, NYC based Kith is serving up some classic adidas tennis shoes for the occasion. The range includes kicks include the Rod Laver, IL Comp and Torsion Edberg.

The color theme speaks to the tennis aesthetic with each sneaker featuring white uppers. In a seeming nod to the blue courts at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York City, each sneaker is accented with hit of royal blue. Finished off with a championship flair, the kicks feature gold lettering on the insoles.

The trio just released today, the 21st of August as a Kith exclusive to kith.com, eu.kith.com, the Kith app and the store’s in-shop locations.

Kith Classics reprises its partnership with adidas Originals for the season to reimagine three tennis-forward silhouettes—the Rod Laver, IL Comp, and Torsion Edberg.

The offering highlights different decades of professional tennis and each model is redesigned with royal blue accents & special Kith for adidas Originals co-branding. Select styles showcase distinct construction details that make the designs popular in their own right.

The Rod Laver silhouette, inspired by the Australian native, is constructed of a knitted mesh upper with pigskin nubuck overlays and features the most simple, yet classy design.

The Torsion Edberg, inspired by the Swedish player Stefan Edberg, showcases a maximalist design with a variety of accent details—and has an upper crafted from full-grain leather with pigskin nubuck overlays.
