Blues chiefs have knocked back Michael Essien’s request to change shirt numbers. The Ghana international hoped to switch from his current No 5 shirt to the No 4 jersey vacated by Claude Makelele, who recently signed for Paris St Germain.

But Essien’s No 5 shirt has proved one of the most popular items in the club shop over the summer.

Chelsea did not want to disappoint fans who had splashed out on the new kit with Essien’s name and number emblazoned on it.

lol how gutting would it be for all the ppl with 'Essien 5' on their shirts if he did change so late and so close to the start of the season. That would be awful specially as these shirts are only used for 1 season. Surely essien would think about the fans, its a bit out of order on his part.

Gallas pulled a stunt like that at Arsenal except he did get it changed lol.Lots of annoyed Arsenal fans

Gallas is still #10.

I reckon Essien will be changing next season then, and they'll announce it early so that people dont get #5.
