Turkey is not a European country. However, a relatively small part of it

(formerly part of Greece) is located in the European continent. After

WWI borders were re-defined and Greece was not given back its former

lands that the Turkish Ottoman Empire had taken from them in 1453. That

is the basis upon which Turkey can participate in European football and is

preparing for ascension into the European Union.
