Would I be right in saying its a formation that was used by England many a time with Lampard somewhere in the diamond ? If so, that alone adds to the proof that its not ideal for him. I know one man doesnt make a team, but when its someone with the ability of Lampard you play to your teams strengths. Once we have Zhirkov and JC available then I think this formation would be more suitable, but right now I dont like it. Either way, CA isnt going to change his formation, so we may get used to it.

As much as I think Essien is a fantastic player, I dont think he's disciplined enough to hold that position. His natural instinct is to get forward and when I've seen him play there in the past he does occassionally wander and leave space where someone like Maka/Mikel are disciplined enough to hold the formation. Mikel did himself no favours today though. He done ok, but he wasnt his normal dominant self.

On paper that would be ideal, but I think to get the best out of Lampard you have to let him make his late runs into the box using a 4-4-2. When he's at the point of the diamond I feel you take something out of his game.

Watching the game today I noticed that I was witnessing the lesser spotted Drogba, last seen several seasons ago terrorising defences up and down the country. I know its only one game, but today he looked like he was completely focused. There wasnt any sign of his "balance deficiency" he's been plagued by in the past. It wasnt his most vintage of games, but on that performance alone I'm very optimistic about the season ahead. When he's on his game here are few who can touch him. Keep it up big man. :thumbsup:

Drogbas free kcik was quality. Other than that, although we have dominated the play, the final ball has been awful. That will come eventually with more match practice. Today should be about getting 3 points on the board. We look like we can do more damage, wether we do or not is another thing.
