We conceded many goals from set pieces in situations, in which Kepa should have come out and catch the ball. He rarely does that. So that means for our CBs that they MUST win the aerial duels. We only have one truly world class player at aerial duels and his name is Zouma. He wins almost as many aeriak duels as VVD does. Tomori, Rüdiger and AC are not that good at aerial duels compared to Zouma. To be honest, I think our defense was good yesterday apart from that huge mistake AC did. The first goal was not Kepa's fault and how should that really affect his confidence. Nobody cares if Kepa concedes goals when there is nothing he could do to prevent it. The Kepa topic is only that big because he does not save the basic shots. He looked better under Sarri, but I think during summer his GF broke up with him and I think Cech or Lampard said that he his also personal issues to deal with, so that does not help either. Usually, good keepers shine in phases, in which defenders play bad. I have seen it many times. DDG at United carried the whole squad when Phil Jones and Smalling were their defenders. Martinez and Leno last season saved Arsenal many times because Mustafi and Luiz are bad defenders. Cech saved us many times when we had Luiz and Cahill partnership 2012. Really good keepers show how good they are in those moments. Right now, I think Mendy solves almost all problems. He can catch balls, he is a presence in the box and can save the basic shots due to his size. I do not think he can make those world class saves like Martinez did last season for instance against the shot from TAA against Pool, but I do not care anymore. This does not even excuse Kepa's horrible mistakes even a bit. He does basic mistakes that should not be happening in professional football that often. Yes, people make mistakes, but every match? Caballero is a bad keeper himself. One of the main reasons why argentina was horrible in the last cup. We have two bad GK that are very similar size wise. We won the title with Mourinho and in almost every big match, we basically parked the bus and then Cesc played one World class pass to Costa, who scored the goal. We did nothing else in those matches. It worked and we won the title. And playing long balls is something Chelsea used to do all the time. I do not remember a time, in which we played Barcelona tiki taka football. It was always long balls to Drogba or Costa. Werner is not able to be a target man and Havertz has to do his part. Neither Kante,Mount Kova nor Jorgi are world class passers like Thiago or Cesc are. If we had one truly world class ball playing midfielder, our play would look much better. Sadly, we will go for a guy like Rice next lol. For me, Alonso and Mount are not good enough and RJ is nowhere near the level of Lamptey for instance. I do not expect much from them anyway. We could compete and still lost the match regardless. Today, if Jorgi scored the penalty, we would have lost 2:1. If AC does not get his stupid red, maybe even 1 point or a win was possible. Kepa also does not help winning games. Pool looked clueless against us and we were competing with them. It is hard to compete against Pool with 10 men. We still had chances with Werner and Tammy. And "being passive" . I mean it worked really well til AC got sent off with an unnecessary challange. We defended well overall, even with 10 men. I just remember we played very deep against City and Pulisic and the Fernandinho red combined with the rewarded penalty won us the game.
