Japan withdraws as host of 2021 Club World Cup due to COVID-19
Japan has withdrawn as the host for the 2021 Club World Cup due to COVID-19 concerns.The tournament, which will feature Champions League winners Chelsea, is scheduled to take place in December. The decision comes after the Japanese government extended emergency COVID-19 restrictions in Tokyo and other regions until the end of this month.
In a statement, world governing body FIFA said: “FIFA can confirm that it has been informed today by the JFA that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and hosting situation in the country, they are no longer in a position to host the FIFA Club World Cup 2021.” The tournament is also due to feature Egyptian side Al Ahly and Auckland City of New Zealand. Four more teams are yet to qualify, including the 2021 Copa Libertadores winners. Bayern Munich won the 2020 Club World Cup, beating Tigres UANL 1-0 in the final in Qatar.
