Madmax 9,219
UEFA president Michel Platini believes football has not done enough to help referees but remains adamant that video technology is not the solution. Refereeing performances have come under increased scrutiny in recent times, with cameras picking up incidents the referee has not seen, but FIFA and UEFA remain reluctant to provide officials with technological solutions.Platini admits referees cannot be expected to get every decision correct, but feels the introduction of goalline assistants - as seen in the Champions League - offers a better solution."This is the story of a referee: he is always under pressure because he is one man," Platini told scottishfa.com. "In tennis, there is one umpire but 12 people who have a say around a much smaller playing area."In a beautiful world, you respect the decisions of a referee, even when he has made a mistake. We have Fair Play and Respect campaigns but it seems we are still a long way off from achieving a good understanding."One referee is not enough, not in the modern era where you have 20 cameras. It is unfair: the cameras can see everything but the referee only has one pair of eyes. Every time he makes a mistake, those cameras are there to focus on it."It is why for the past ten years I have asked to change the job of the referee, to help improve the situation and to give the referees better support."He added: "These people are going to make mistakes and to be a referee I think you have to be a masochist. The system is bad and I have known this for 40 years."The referee has to be helped by the clubs, the fans, by players, by the media and also by the authorities - everyone has a responsibility."It is why we have added two assistants for Champions League games this season. It is a logical step with so many cameras that can pick up incidents: the more eyes there to assist the referee, the better the chance of spotting those incidents."Platini said that he believes the use of technology would lead to "PlayStation football".ESPN Soccernet

LDN Blue 7,903
Thing is. I understand Platini's point, because to a certain extent the mistakes are a part of football. Technology in football would be very hard to implement, simply because it flows so quickly. With sports like tennis and cricket you can stop and wait for a decision because there's no fixed limit for a match (to the extent football is) and so it would take a while. LDN Blue 7,903
Haha I guess I'm the only one who'd say he's right I guess.I think technology should be used for if the ball passes the line, & nothing more. Not for penalty decision and not for offside.
Laylabelle 9,535
Hasnt there been mistakes made anyway with the extra blokes.Missing something at somepoint that was important..Yeh agree just the goal line cause at the moment seems an issue of them being able to call it right..but soon as Lampard had that one not given shock horror he's been more against it.Pretty much stright afetr that came out with 'nah dont need that'
BlueLion. 21,491
Agreed. But I also think there should be a referral system, like in cricket. Each team has two referrals and they can be used by the captain to challenge any decision, ie. penalty kicks being awarded, red cards, etc.
Luke 60
We already have breaks and stoppages in football, injuries, subs etc, so 10 seconds isnt going to harm the game is it for a forth official to view a replay and get a message across to the ref via an ear piece etc.

It would simply kill the flow of the game, I think Platini doesn't want to use technology because then he'd have to create the boundaries of what/what can not be referred.I think if technology was to come in it should be at a referee's discretion. They all wear ear pieces now so he can simply ask the question through the mic, but again boundaries should be guidelined for them. As it is, the role of 4th official is still disputed. Last season in La Liga there was an incident (forgot the match) where the defender fell in the area whilst defending, then handled the ball away on purpose. The referee missed it, but the 4th official brought it up and the defender was subsequently & rightfully sent off.The point to that is, there was a huge appeal launched by the other team, their defence being the 4th official is not allowed to interfere in play like that. With the same point, the rules using technology would have to be so clear cut that no conflict could arise. And frankly I think it would cause more controversy/complaints than it would bring "fair play" in.

Madmax 9,219
Goal line technology is a must imo. It's just not fair that a goal can be chalked off only because the ref or his assistant couldn't see it. Penalties I agree should be left to the ref and his supporting officials. But I do honestly feel that technology can be used to determine offsides. Every week we see inconsistent refereeing regarding the offside rule and it just spoils the game because then even the fans become unsure of what exactly is deemed to be offside, and what is not. As BlueLion said, a referral system would be nice, especially for goals which include a debatable offside decision. Surely 2 referrals a side isn't going to interfere with the flow of the game. It's better than having goals allowed/disallowed for refereeing errors. But it's wishful thinking, as long as this guy remains where he is.
