Terry will get the boot, says Cannavaro

John Terry's future in the England team is under severe threat, according to former Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro.

Deposed skipper Terry incurred the wrath of manager Fabio Capello during England's dismal World Cup campaign when he suggested the players were ready to confront the Italian over his tactics and team selection.

The Chelsea centre-back was forced to back down after Capello called his comments a "big mistake", but kept his place in the side before England were bundled out in the second round after a 4-1 humbling by Germany.

Cannavaro, who won the World Cup with Italy in 2006 before suffering a humiliating group-stage exit in South Africa, knows Capello well after working under his compatriot at Real Madrid.

And the experienced defender believes the strict disciplinarian will begin preparing for the 2012 European Championship by making sweeping changes to the Three Lions squad, with Terry the most at risk.

"My thoughts are that John Terry won't be on the team sheet," Cannavaro told the Daily Star Sunday.

"You don't cross Fabio and he won't want anybody disrupting his tournament again.

"It was absolutely the correct decision for the English FA to keep Fabio on. He can make this England team his own now - and I would actually make them the favourites for Euro 2012.

"When he joined Real Madrid he brought a lot of players in the first season like myself and Ruud van Nistelrooy and the result was instant success but internationally it takes time to build your own team.

"I don't want to speak for Fabio but I'd be surprised if more than five of the players who started against Germany start the opening game of Euro 2012.

"For me, the only two players that can be guaranteed to start in 2012 are Ashley Cole and Wayne Rooney.

"By then Fabio will have had enough time to build his own team and I think it will be unrecognisable compared to what it was at the World Cup.

"Spain will be there but if Fabio gets rid of egos, I think England will see exactly why it was a good decision to keep him on."

What is it about Chelsea players that people just love to gloat about?? Is it because we're easy targets for the press?

Saw this on SkySports this morning, I hate to say it but I think he's right. Not that Terry should get the boot, but the fact that he probably will. It's quite obvious, the Chelsea players (bar Lampard perhaps) are being made the scapegoats for England's poor TEAM campaign. Ashley Cole for upsetting the nations favourite princess (Cheryl) and taking pictures of the England squad having some drinks. Terry for his affair and then speaking out of term, which personally I thought was quite harmless but there's British media for you. John Terry, the true England captain, is the scapegoat. It's a shame because now the countries hopes in defence will be onto crooked Rio & King + out of form Upson + no experience Dawson.

Only if Rio will be able to play, because I've heard he thinks about retirement due to his back problems...

the media picks who plays for England ,who captains ,who manages them..that`s why Capello has spent the last 6 months or so, trying to please them and thats why since that time England team has lost it`s mojo....no team can suceed when they being coached by a puppet coach.

and indeed Cannavaro should be concentrating on his own football career .if playing in Saudi Arabia can be classed as a football career..

I think we should say "he should be concentrating on making money" that's how it's called there...

read this yesterday and thought it was a nice way for the italian captain to distract attention away from the fact that they had a PATHETIC world cup

but honestly i agree with frank in thinking that england dont deserve the services of the chelsea boys and i think it'll be better for the club if JT gets booted - england will suffer further and then who will they blame ?
