What is the difference between a Catholic and a Protestant. Arent both Christians? Pardon my ignorance but, is it true that all English are Protestants and all Spanish are Catholics?

I know, The first think I read was Wiki, but it was too confusing. So was hoping for a direct answer.

Catholics practice their religion as per the Pope sitting in the Vatican in Rome. Protestants formed as people began to disagree with Catholic policies and what not. They both follow the Bible, but interpret it in different ways and have derived different rules of life from it.

And to say that all people in England are protestant and all people in Spanish are catholic is a ridiculous stereotype. For sure there are catholics in England, that's how we still have an Archbishop of Canterbury and other places. And then you forget about the large contingent of atheists, and all the muslims, jews, hindus, buddhists and other religions. It will be the same for Spain.

Was watching the Movie ELIZABETH. And it was more about Catholic vs Protestants where, Spanish are Catholics and consult Pope on every decision they make and the English Queen and kingdom follow the protestants and there is a conspiracy by few English Catholics to bring down the Protestant Kingdom of Queen.

Hence my question.

But back in the times when that film was set, things were a lot more cut and dried because religions were a legal issue. A country had to be a certain religion in many cases.

I dint stereotype anyone. I just asked if all english are protestants cus thats what I saw in the movie. Anyways, thanks for the ans.
