Lamp in the dark

The Football League have confirmed that Chelsea's goal in the 2-1 loss at Sunderland on Tuesday night has been credited to Frank Lampard.

The Blues midfielder converted from close range just 39 seconds into the second half to give José Mourinho's men the lead at the Stadium of Light, only for the team to succumb to a late Sunderland fight-back as they were dumped out of the competition.

Sky Sports originally gave the goal to Lampard but the BBC and other sources accredited Black Cats midfielder Lee Cattermole as the unfortunate scorer of an own goal.

However, on review, the goal has retrospectively been awarded to Chelsea's number 8 after referee Anthony Taylor's official match report named Lampard as the Blues' goalscorer.

With Lampard being named as the goalscorer, Cesar Azpilicueta will now be formally awarded an assist.

The news serves as a microcosmic positive after Tuesday's capitulation on Wearside, and means Lampard - Chelsea's all-time top goalscorer - is now seven goals clear (209) of second-placed Bobby Tambling (202), who held the record until May this year.
