I'm no lawyer, but it seems pretty stupid for them to plead guilty if they're not. Is there some kind of advantage in doing so, like a reduced sentence?

It may be that or it may even be some other issue the suspect has. I once saw a documentary about the methods used in interrogation, and there was this one innocent young man that the detective was so rough with that he lied just to make the interrogations stop.
