chrismada9 1,948
Well, now that Drogba has returned for African Cup of Nations Duty, thought I'd put a post up regarding him and Anelka's imminent partnership. Would love to see them play together against Olympiakos in mid-week. Burning question is....will they gel together? I think they can. Drogba's strength, Anelka's pace. discuss here.... BlueLion. 21,491
Well they are both world class players so they will gel in time. They could start banging in goals left, right and centre in a couple of weeks or it could take till next season. If it doesn't work, then we have plenty of options. Remeber how excited we were t have Shevcheco? Anyways..I DONT think they will gel. They both are target men none is a supporting striker. It all comes down to grant how he manages them both on the field. To play them both we will need to play 4-4-2. Drogs and Anelka, SWP LAMPS OBI MIKEL JOE COLE and then the back line. that leaves ballack and essien on the bench. or play 4-3-3 with drogba in important UCL matches and anelka in cup ties as the lone strikers. Gianfranco_Z 202
Shevchenko and Drogba FTW. I dont know about Anelka and I want sheva to do well... Who knows... I dont know. I like having Wingers with 3 up front anyway.
BlueLion. 21,491
Anelka can play on the wing. I'd like to see a 4-3-3 of: Cech Belletti, Terry, Carvalho, Bridge Essien, Lampard, Mikel Anelka, Drogba, Joe Cole

Cracker 0
I think it would be just great to see them play together 4-4-2, but that also depends what will be our situation with Sub-strikers on the bench.. I really don't see Sheva agreeing to stay in the team as a third Sub-striker if we continue to play with only one striker as we have until now.. Cracker 0
Anelka can play on the wing. I'd like to see a 4-3-3 of: Cech Belletti, Terry, Carvalho, Bridge Essien, Lampard, Mikel Anelka, Drogba, Joe Cole Yeah..that also seems like a very good option.. again I might be wrong but I think that we will have to play them both together quite allot if we want to keep someone as good as Sheva as a Sub. But actually even that might not be enough to keep Sheva in the team next season,..well just have to wait & see how things will evolve in the end between this "Trio" Edited February 18, 2008 by Cracker
EskWeston 696
It certainly seems like they will be given the chance to play together, no if that is in a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 with Anelka on the wing - who knows..... i think they have the ingredients to make a fantastic partnership. Anelka playing off Drogba in theory should be dynamite, only time will tell though.

EskWeston 696
what makes you think mikel can get ahead of essein and ballack? Because he is the only midfielder who offers something different than what we get from Lampard, Essien and Ballack. Mikel is a player who hardly every loses the ball and builds the attacks to perfection. I would always want him in the team....
BlueLion. 21,491
But the energy of Michael Essien is epitomized by the fact he would chase a ball 70 yards when his team are 3-0 up with 5 minutes left. Plus the fact he's fucking amazing in general. I would play Essien over Mikel because I feel his all-round game is more developed than Mikel's, although I feel that is down to experience and age. I think they are great together but having five worldclass central midfielders in a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 is potentially problematic.

You can't play them all, and i would be wary of playing a trio of Essien, Lampard and Ballack because i feel they are all too similar and it will have a negative influence on the performance.. They all in their own respects World Class, but we can't play them all and they will all have to understand that, we have to put the team out best suited to win that game that we are playing. BlueLion. 21,491
Mikel, Essien, Lampard would be my ideal pick, with Lampard the furthest forward and Mikel holding. With Essien naturally defensive at club level, he and Mikel can alternate and we can give either player a rest by fielding Makelele. The same can be said with Ballack - he can be alternated with Lampard to give either a rest.

The choices we have are great and it means we can always field a world class midfield and at the same time keep players fresh. Getting the Balance is going to be hard though i feel. BlueLion. 21,491
Well these superstars know they are not going to be first choice, and its the players who try the hardest in training and on the field that will get the starting positions. Saying that, being able to put on Michael Ballack and Nicolas Anelka when you need a goal is quite a tasty prospect.

Our bench will glitter gold now we have a full strength squad....
