Was good in patches but ultimately, didn't contribute enough up front to really make a difference.

At times, it looks as if Hazard plays just to have fun on the pitch. Once he's satisfied, he'll just switch off and go through the motion in games. He doesn't have that killer instinct, ruthless streak that separates the great from the good. He has done many good things, contributed a lot but it's kinda hard to pick out a period where he played consistently great for 90 minutes week in, week out.

If it's over two legs, I doubt they'll be able to beat Atletico. But if it's a one off, then anything can happen.

Imagine 5 of the other big 6 make it into the Champions League next season and we're the only one in the Europa League!
-
They are basically all related. Just because it worked for 2 seasons, doesn't mean it should be disregarded entirely. Ta.

Did you even read my posts properly? I already mentioned the style of play in my first reply to your post... In any case, I'm not even sure why you are countering the point. We're pretty much onto the same subject here. I mentioned our recent underwhelming record in Europe while you pointed out the reasons that have caused that, some of which I agree.

It’s not 7 but we had 4 different managers between 2004 and 2010 and 2 of them were duds. But that did stop us from competing with the best? No. So because we have been the best performing English team, we should be happy with that record? Yeah, there’s Messi and Ronaldo but did that stop Bayern from reaching 3 finals in 4 seasons or Juventus/Atletico reaching 2 in 3? Did Messi and Ronaldo make us park the bus against 10 men? Did they make us do that against Atletico? Did they make us play poorly in the big matches? It’s not like we’ve been getting to the semi finals or final and getting foiled by Messi or Ronaldo.

Hard to be consistent when you're constantly being hampered by injuries, no? Even then, Bale has shown that he can produce it on the big stage and has scored important goals in the big European matches. Don't think the same can be said about Hazard.

You fellas took the Arsenal reference a tad too seriously. That said, the similarities are definitely there. I mean sure, we made it to the semi finals twice and won the whole thing once within the last 8 years - something that Arsenal can't boast about. But I guess my point is, on the whole, we have not been good enough in the last 8 years, have we? Between 2004-2009, we were one of the best sides in Europe, consistently reaching the latter stages of the competition and capable of beating anyone at any stage. Since then, we have been steadily going downhill. 2011/12 aside, every single defeat have been bad, bad in the performances and the manner of how we approached the games. Lost to one the worst United sides in history, parked the bus against Atletico and got overrun, didn't qualify from the group stage, parked the bus and f***ed up against 10 men etc. In fact, if we include 2011/12, we had bad performances during that season as well and the victory owed much to the desire, determination more than anything else. You can say that we lost to good teams recently, which the likes of PSG and Barcelona are, but the team that we had around 10 years ago would have stood up and beaten these lots today. Would they have folded so easily? These days, we're almost just hoping for the best and pray that we somehow get past the big teams. We're almost always afraid of drawing those big sides. Was this the case 10 years ago? The fact that we almost had no expectation going into the Barcelona tie - even before the first leg - says a lot about our current predicament when it comes to competing with the best in Europe.

Our Champions League record since 08/09 season: 2009/10 - Last 16 2010/11 - Quarter-Final 2011/12 - WINNER 2012/13 - Group Stage 2013/14 - Semi-Final 2014/15 - Last 16 2015/16 - Last 16 2017/18 - Last 16 Only TWO semi-final appearances. FOUR defeats in round of 16. Very Arsenal that.

He has the talent and quality but do you think Real would want him after watching his performance tonight? Think whether he goes to Madrid will depend on Zidane staying as manager. Their board seem more interested in signing Neymar.
-
Seems to me that Courtois is good at stopping shots from distance but when it comes to saving from close range, he can be found wanting...quite easily in fact.
-
Definitely showed he's more than capable of holding his own in the Champions League.
-
What to make of Hazard's performance today? We took a much more offensive approach than usual and he didn't have to play as the 'False 9' but yet, he went AWOL after like 30 minutes.
-
Yes, that takes some doing but if I'm going to be critical, what's the point of looking threatening if we don't even have the end product? It's like watching Arsenal play us years ago - play attacking football but become brain dead in final third and we just pick them off on the counter. Pretty much the same thing happened.
-
No way I'm gonna defend him tonight. Was shit. In fact, you're kinda right. When was the last time we came away from a game, thinking 'THANK GOD FOR COURTOIS!' or 'Courtois is definitely the MOTM!'?
-
By the way, this is our third consecutive Champions League exit in the round of 16. We're becoming Arsenal...
-
Even with the attacking approach today, we didn't exactly create many clear cut chances, did we? Looked more dangerous yes but think we only had like 1-2 shots inside the box. It's all ifs and buts now but this leg would have been different had we gotten some luck with one of those shots or Christensen didn't press the self destruct button in the first leg.
-
You don't often say this about Barcelona but that scoreline really flatters them. No way did they deserve to win 3-0 and 4-1 on aggregate. Can't fault the effort and commitment of the players over the two legs but sadly, we were found wanting at both ends of the pitch, especially defensively. Basically handed Barcelona all 4 goals on a plate. Champions League is gone now and so, the season hinges on next 2 games.
-
Wonder if it's because Barcelona aren't relegation fodders.
-
This. Sometimes it looks as if Hazard is more interested in going for the tricks and flicks rather than doing some more productive!
-
Don't know whether I should cry or laugh. Have played well in the 135 minutes of this tie but somehow, we find ourselves 3-1 down on aggregate. Been pressing the self destruct button defensively far too often. All 3 of Barcelona's goals have come from our mistakes!
