Mauricio Pochettino makes Chelsea vs Middlesbrough admission as Todd Boehly target threatened Mauricio Pochettino thinks Chelsea's Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg against Middlesbrough is the biggest match of his short tenure at Stamford Bridge to date https://www.football.london/Chelsea-fc/news/mauricio-pochettino-makes-Chelsea-vs-28493141 Mauricio Pochettino believes Chelsea's Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg match with Middlesbrough on Tuesday night is the biggest game of his Blues career so far. Pochettino's side are 1-0 down after losing in the first-leg at the Riverside Stadium but have the chance to put that right at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are potentially 90 minutes from a trip to Wembley next month but need to overcome a stubborn Middlesbrough side first of all. Michael Carrick set up his team very well a fortnight ago as they held onto a one-goal lead in the north east. Pochettino did not seem too downhearted after the defeat, despite plenty of Chelsea supporters being very frustrated with what they witnessed. Instead, the Chelsea head coach kept reiterating it was only 'half-time' in the tie. Now is his chance to put things right. When asked if the match with Boro is the biggest of his tenure at Stamford Bridge thus far, Pochettino responded: "Yes, because it is access to the final. We need to be convincing if we are going to win. It is the opportunity to play in a final so it is the most important so far." Pochettino is relishing the pressure, too, when asked about how his young squad will cope with a decisive leg in a semi-final – unchartered territory for a lot of them. He said: "It is good pressure. I like this kind of challenge. "We want to be in that situation and play in a semi-final but for Middlesbrough it is going to be tough also. They need to defend their 1-0 lead. We suffered some criticism which was good and now it is the chance to be free and play and go and show the road to the final." READ MORE: Every word Mauricio Pochettino said on Chelsea transfers, Nkunku injury, Casadei recall and more READ MORE: Benzema signs, Gallagher deal, Diomande plan – What Chelsea must do in January transfer window Tuesday evening – more than anything, perhaps – is the perfect opportunity for Pochettino to show the club's board and owners a clear indication of progress. Reaching a cup final in your debut season is nothing to be sniffed at. Pochettino knows just how much pressure comes with the responsibility of managing Chelsea. football.london understands his job is not under threat at the moment but Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali's ruthless nature was showcased last season when they cut ties with Graham Potter after seven months at the club. Some of the supporters on social media have called for Pochettino to be sacked but the club continue to back him. Either way, a win against Boro would be hugely significant for Pochettino and his players. "I think it is really important because it is a possibility to win a title - and yes, the effect is, yes, I agree - to maybe reduce a little bit the pressure on some players," the Argentine said. But I think the excitement to play tomorrow in a personal way is so exciting. Because it is 90 minutes away from playing again at Wembley in a final to have the possibility to win a title. "I am so motivated and, of course, we try to translate to the players how good it is to play a final at Wembley. Some players have experience of already being in a final and we need dot translate this experience to the younger ones about the possibility to play there, in a special place, and it is really important." Chelsea's owners are desperate to return to European football next season and one way to do that is by winning the Carabao Cup, where they will then automatically qualify for the Europa Conference League. There are so many narratives that make Chelsea's second-leg with Middlesbrough just that bit bigger.

https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/breaking-tommy-baldwin-dead-Chelsea-31943091 Chelsea legend Tommy Baldwin has died aged 78. Tommy Baldwin, who represented England at youth level, played for the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Brentford and Arsenal during his memorable playing career Baldwin was part of the Chelsea side that defeated Leeds in the 1970 FA Cup final and Real Madrid in the 1971 European Cup Winners' Cup final. The forward, who also played as a winger, scored 92 goals in 239 games for the Blues to cement his place in their history. Born in Gateshead, Baldwin started his career at Arsenal before spending eight years at Stamford Bridge. He also completed stints at Millwall and Manchester United - as well as a short spell in the United States with Seattle Sounders - before retiring at Brentford. Chelsea have led the tributes to Baldwin. "It is with enormous sadness that Chelsea Football Club announces the passing today at the age of 78 of our former forward Tommy Baldwin, following a long illness," read the west London club's statement. "We send our heartfelt condolences to Tommy’s family and friends." Chelsea have described Baldwin as "one of the less-glamorous players in a famously flamboyant side" but "an important cog in the squad that regularly reached cup finals". They've also called him "the leader of the team" - as per his famous song at Stamford Bridge. Baldwin represented England at youth level but was never selected to play for the senior team. He also appeared in the 1967 FA Cup final and 1972 League Cup final, which Chelsea lost to Tottenham and Stoke respectively, and worked as a coach at Brentford. Baldwin often appeared at Stamford Bridge as a matchday host. As per Chelsea's tribute, he was "always happy for the chance to reunite with team-mates with whom he shared such glorious times and meet fans who had enjoyed them so much." Baldwin won the FA Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup with Chelsea Chelsea Supporters' Trust have also paid tribute to Baldwin. They wrote on X: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Tommy Baldwin. The thoughts of the CST board and all our members around the world are with Tommy's family at this difficult time." Other Chelsea fans have also paid their respects on X. "RIP The Sponge," wrote one supporter, referring to Baldwin's nickname at Stamford Bridge. "I joined the Tommy Baldwin Fan Club as a boy. Just a wonderful servant to our great club." Baldwin was known as 'The Sponge' for two reasons. Firstly, because of his ability to hold up the ball and bring his team-mates into play. And secondly, because of his ability to drink large amount of booze while bonding with his team-mates in the pub. Both of those were welcomed attributes in English football during the 1960s and 1970s. Baldwin once joked: "There's a little bit of truth in all of them. But it (the nickname) did originally come from allegedly having a sponge in my stomach!"

The cunning Chelsea and Fulham swap deal that could turbocharge both clubs' seasons Chelsea and Fulham are already reported to be in transfer negotiations - but could a swap deal make more sense? https://www.3addedminutes.com/sport/football/Chelsea/cunning-Chelsea-fuham-swap-deal-turbocharge-both-clubs-seasons-4487722 First he was linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, and now it’s Fulham – but wherever he ends up, it looks a lot like Trevoh Chalobah’s time with Chelsea is drawing to a close. The 24-year-old centre-half, not so long ago a regular feature in the matchday squad at Stamford Bridge, hasn’t feature this season thanks to injury, and may well never play under Mauricio Pochettino at all. Given Chelsea’s desire to generate further transfer funds by selling home-grown players, Fulham’s desire to bolster their defence with Tosin Adarabioyo looking likely to leave at the end of the season, and Chalobah’s own need to be playing regular first-team football and build upon his early promise, a switch to Craven Cottage makes plenty of sense. The rumours around the potential move suggest that Chalobah would move to Fulham – where his elder brother Nathaniel played for two seasons before joining West Bromwich Albion in the summer – on an initial loan deal, with an option to buy in the region of £20-25m. But given Chelsea’s many needs in the transfer market, one wonders whether they shouldn’t look to engineer a transfer which sees a current Fulham player move the other way. There are still a couple of glaring gaps in Pochettino’s squad, but depth at full-back is among the more urgent needs. At left-back, Ben Chilwell has been spending too much time on the treatment table while Marc Cucurella, who has had fitness problems of his own, has proven unreliable at best. As a result, the excellent Levi Colwill has been deputising on the left side of defence, and while has been superb for the most part, he is a natural centre-back and Chelsea will need him there when Thiago Silva leaves in the summer, as seems very likely. It also doesn’t help the case for planning a future for Colwill at left-back that he doesn’t offer the same kind of penetration going forward that a wing-back like Chilwell does. Chelsea need somebody who can combine defensive duties with the capacity to move the ball forward quickly to support the attack – and Antonee Robinson fits the profile pretty well. The American international has been one of Fulham’s most consistent performers this season, and has improved dramatically over the last two years, especially in terms of his defensive ability. His tackling success rate is impressive, but where he really shines is in his reading of the game and anticipation of where opponents will play the next ball – he makes a massive 2.49 interceptions per game, and contributes more than three blocks and clearances every 90 minutes he plays, superb numbers for a full-back. Where once he tended to get caught out of position or lose his man at the back post, how he gets to the ball first and deals with danger. And he offers plenty going forward, too. While he doesn’t have the same quality with the final ball as Chilwell – his cross success rate of around 25% is fairly respectable but 10% lower than the England left-back’s – where he does shine is in his ability to get down the flank at speed and provide passing options for his team-mates. He uses the ball when he gets it well, too, and his dribbling is excellent, allowing him to break out of defence quickly in possession and to beat his man and get into dangerous areas in the final third. Robinson isn’t as good as Chilwell going forward, but he is stronger in the tackle and generates more turnovers. At 26 he is slightly younger and has a better fitness record – and he would significantly strengthen Chelsea’s depth, giving them a reliable rotational option and the extra body they need to move Colwill into the middle on a more permanent basis. Would Fulham be willing to sell Robinson? Perhaps not. He is an important player, a near ever-present in the Premier League (he has started every game bar the home game to Luton Town when he was injured) and is highly valued by Marco Silva. Transfermarkt estimates his transfer value as €20m (£17.1m), which feels on the low end given that he has a contract which runs until 2028 – but it is lower than the reported fee being discussed for Chalobah, so perhaps a swap deal could make sense for both parties. Fulham would get the centre-back they need, and Chelsea would get a proven Premier League performer without having to resort to their own rather patchy scouting. And Robinson himself would finally get the chance to play for a blue chip club that once passed him by when he failed a medical at AC Milan before he moved to Craven Cottage. Back then he was a fresh-faced breakthrough act at Wigan Athletic, and while his progress hasn’t been quite as meteoric as some anticipated when he first came to public attention, his performances this season suggest that he is finally living up to a lot of the early hype. Chelsea could be the perfect platform for him to finish his development. Still, using Chalobah to engineer a trade for Robinson doesn’t sound too on brand for Todd Boehly’s Chelsea. It would be sensible, economical and not particularly flashy. That isn’t how Chelsea have operated since the takeover, and there haven’t been too many signs that they plan to change tack just yet. So chances are that we’ll see Chalobah move on and that be the end of that – but it isn’t too hard to imagine Robinson getting a big move one day soon. He’s considerably better than a lot of people realise.

Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres is not high up the list of priority targets for Chelsea, sources have told Football Insider. https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-major-update-on-Chelsea-agreeing-86m-viktor-gyokeres-deal/ Football Insider revealed on Saturday (20 January) that the Blues have not yet made a firm move for the 25-year-old striker despite reports to the contrary. Sporting boss Ruben Amorim has confirmed the existence of a release clause in Gyokeres’ contract – which is reportedly worth €100million (£86million). It is believed Chelsea will not pay anywhere close to that figure if they are to follow up their interest.

yep, they have been the only unbeaten club left in the big 5 euro leagues for ages that said: PSV Eindhoven drew 1-1 with FC Utrecht on Sunday to drop points in the Eredivisie for the first time this season and fall one match short of becoming the first Dutch top-flight team to start the season with 18 straight victories. The Peter Bosz-managed team’s run of 17 straight victories matched a winning streak set by another PSV team in 1988 — the year the club won its only European Cup — the predecessor of the Champions League. But PSV’s hope of making history was ended when Utrecht forward Othman Boussaid struck in the 53rd minute to cancel out a first-half header by Johan Bakayoko that had given PSV hope of creating history.
