CIES Football Observatory n°253 - 06/03/2019 Values Squad transfer values: English clubs at the top http://www.football-observatory.com/IMG/sites/b5wp/2018/253/en/ Weekly Post number 253 presents the aggregated transfer value of big-5 league clubs. According to the algorithm exclusively developed by the CIES Football Observatory, the estimated value of the squad of five teams is over one billion euro. Four of them are from the Premier League, which reflects the financial power of the English top division. Barcelona is the best-ranked non-English team. The total transfer value of Manchester City players is almost €1.5 billion. This figure is one time and a half higher than the transfer fees spent to assemble the squad. However, this capital gain is only hypothetical insofar a team like Manchester City wants to win trophies rather than releasing its best footballers. In addition, within the current inflationary context, possible replacements are far more expensive than their predecessors. The squad transfer value of four teams of the table is more than three times greater than the sums spent in transfer indemnities to recruit current players: Olympique Lyonnais (15th, x3.3), Real Sociedad (31st, x3.4), LOSC Lille (37th, x3.2) and Real Betis (38th, x3.1). Well-established in the top division league of their country of belonging, these clubs have an equally well-established business model relying on the promotion of talents. The estimates for all big-5 league players are available on the CIES Football Observatory website. Transfer expenditure to assemble the squad and aggregate transfer value (million €) Big-5 league clubs - without players on loan

“I’m never nervous” – Callum Hudson-Odoi serves reminder to Maurizio Sarri that he is always ready to play https://www.chelsea-news.co/2019/03/im-never-nervous-callum-hudson-odoi-serves-reminder-maurizio-sarri-always-ready-play/ If life in football is all about picking the right moments to shine then Callum Hudson-Odoi has chosen a good path and his ability to wait for his chances has been perfect. Hudson-Odoi has displayed the perfect characteristics in his seemingly anxious waiting period. It has been long, especially for an 18-year old, but he has behaved himself. The offers from Bayern Munich did not fool him into showing a dark side to the club that has nurtured him all through his youthful days. Chelsea are refusing to sell him to the Bavarians who are promising him lots of first-team minutes and of course more money. But Hudson-Odoi has kept his head down. Although Maurizio Sarri is yet to give him extended time on the pitch among the highly paid stars at Stamford Bridge, Hudson-Odoi has not sulked or looked out place when given the rare chance. snip

https://thesefootballtimes.co/2019/03/06/the-mind-games-death-threats-and-individual-genius-of-chelsea-vs-barcelona-in-2005/ Brushing aside the obstacles of Victor Valdés and the stadium sprinklers, José Mourinho sprinted across the Camp Nou pitch, his arm aloft in celebration as he looked to locate the pocket of Italian fans who had made the trip across the Mediterranean. The Internazionale manager had just inflicted the pain of defeat on Barcelona and was determined to demonstrate just how much satisfaction triumph over the Catalans had provided him. The scene was reminiscent of one that had taken place five years earlier in 2005. Mourinho, cloaked in his grey trench coat, strode across the Stamford Bridge turf with a clenched fist raised to salute the home supporters. The Chelsea boss had just witnessed his side overcome Barcelona in a tie that produced managerial mind games, tunnel fracases, allegations of skullduggery, controversial red cards, stunning goals and, sadly, heinous death threats. Previously, a second-round Champions League fixture between Chelsea and Barcelona would not have carried the level of hype and expectation that had grown in the lead up to this encounter. It was the events of the summer in 2003, though, that had set the clubs on a continental collision course as they underwent a revolution in their respective quests to establish themselves as the number one force in European football. Barcelona had been floundering since the turn of the millennium. Failure to land silverware in any competition since 1999, Los Cules’ barren run coincided with several disastrous managerial and player recruits as Real Madrid, Deportivo and Valencia left the Catalan giants in the shadows in LaLiga. It took the arrival of Joan Laporta, a Catalan lawyer who won the club presidential elections that summer, to change the fortunes of the club. Laporta’s first significant moves were to bring in Frank Rijkaard as head coach and secure the signing of Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho from Paris Saint-Germain. Following a difficult start, Rijkaard had taken a struggling patchwork of a team and moulded them back into contention for LaLiga by the end of his first season in charge. snip
