Gilmour can compete for Chelsea starting XI – Lampard https://www.football365.com/news/billy-gilmour-compete-chelsea-starting-xi-frank-lampard Chelsea boss Frank Lampard expects fit-again Billy Gilmour to compete for first-team action on an equal footing with the club’s big gun midfielders. The teenage Scottish talent made a hugely impressive senior Stamford Bridge breakthrough last term, featuring 11 times in all competitions. The 19-year-old’s campaign was cut short by knee injury in July however and the former Rangers youth star has only just returned to full fitness. Chelsea boss Lampard has confirmed Gilmour will travel to Spain for Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Sevilla and tipped the technically gifted playmaker to pick up just where he left off before his knee problem. “He’s fit now Billy, he could probably do with some more match minutes which are hard to get in Covid times, but he’s doing very well,” Lampard said. “It will be nice if he can get some minutes particularly over these two Champions League games, in the remainder of the group stage. “And where do I see him? I see him hopefully coming back at the level he was at just before he got injured. “He made a great impact and there will be so much more to come from him this time, because of the talent he has. “He’s got a great attitude, he trains brilliantly, and he’s looking spot-on. “So he comes in just to compete in the squad with the other players in that midfield area.” Chelsea have already secured qualification for the Champions League’s last 16, courtesy of four straight victories in Group E. The Blues will now battle it out with Sevilla for the top spot however, which would in theory lead to an easier knockout tie. Chelsea’s hectic schedule leaves Lampard little choice but to rotate his resources for Wednesday’s match, but the Blues boss admitted he has plenty of players itching for a chance to impress. “We’re fully fit and ready to go,” said Lampard. “I’ll have to give players a chance, and for different reasons. “Some players have been playing a lot, we’ve been talking about the hectic schedule. It is hectic but we can’t say that on the one hand and then maybe not look at rotation for this game. “And on the other side of that players who haven’t played as regularly have been training really, really well and part of the group and important to us. So some are just knocking on the door and deserve opportunities. “So we’re not taking the game lightly, even though we’ve qualified, we want to top the group. “I don’t expect a drop in level, but there will be an opportunity for some players to get some minutes. “We want to win the group for different reasons, obviously your pathway through would be the beneficial position. “Also in terms of motivation, those players that haven’t played so many minutes, their motivation is to try to show why they should be in the starting XI. “I have different choices, and it’s an opportunity for players to give me more difficult choices moving forward. “And as a collective, we’re on a good run, we haven’t lost since Liverpool which was a difficult game for us because of circumstances that happened in the game. “In football my experiences are that if you’re going well and you decide you want to flick the switch off, and flick it back on again, it doesn’t work that way. “So we have to remain consistent in our approach.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer backs FA investigation into Edinson Cavani’s “negrito” post https://theathletic.com/news/edinson-cavani-negrito-machester-united-latest/UXFeks0jQ067 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will support an FA investigation into Edinson Cavani’s ‘negrito’ Instagram post, Laurie Whitwell reports. Manchester United manager Solskjaer also revealed that Cavani was “deeply sorry” for the post and he would support education for players from different cultures who move to the UK. The FA issued guidelines at the beginning of the 2020-21 season with warnings about racist and discriminatory language. Offences on social media carry a minimum three-game ban. What did Solskjaer say on Tuesday? Solskjaer said: “We’ve communicated with Edinson and he’s really deeply sorry for the mistake he’s made, there was no malicious intent at all. “It’s one of those unfortunate situations where he’s just come into the country and in Uruguay he’s been using a different affection to what we have so we'll support him and we support the FA. “It’s important the FA have asked him to explain and it’s out there for everyone to see because we want to be in the fight against discrimination with everyone.” When asked whether players who come from different cultures should be educated, Solskjaer replied: “I think so. I saw Gary (Neville) said something on maybe all players coming from different cultures should be educated and I’m sure Edinson has learnt the hard way.” What happened? On Sunday, Cavani came off the bench for United and scored a double as they came back from 2-0 down to beat Southampton 3-2. After the game, he reposted an image from a fan to his story on Instagram, adding the caption “Gracias negrito”. The phrase loosely translates to “thanks little black boy”. Cavani went on to delete the Instagram post and apologised for it on Monday. The FA are now looking into the post. What is the context for the phrase? The term is not common in England, although it has clear racial connotations. In South America, it is used affectionately. What are the FA regulations around this? The FA now has rules governing written communications. As their rules state, the regulatory commissions are allowed to “apply a match-based sanction below the standard range where an offence is ‘in writing only or via any communication device’ and another specific mitigating factor is present.” The minimum in that situation, if Cavani goes on to be charged and found guilty, is three games, compared to the standard minimum ban of six games for discrimination. Is this likely to be resolved swiftly? No. It isn’t likely to be a quick solution at all. United will have to respond to the FA. Cavani could yet be charged, given a warning or face no action.

100% agreed, Mount is a great player never could understand the hate if he left tomorrow it would be a massive loss I expect the same thing will happen with Rice when he comes only downside to Rice is that some prat long ago said he had unfixable technical deficiencies and so we let him walk still have not once had anyone tell me who it was and what the so-called deficiencies were I see none when I watch him play, and it is now for years and years that I have observed him I was unhappy with the Chilwell price when it was supposedly around £80m, put what we ended up paying was fair, and he has been a top 5 in the world LB since he came IMHO only LB's I rate above Chilwell are Alphonso Davies and Robertson, then Alaba (who is more of a CB now) and maybe Theo Hernández and the only others ones I truly rate (and below Ben) at all are Lucas, Theo's brother, Renan Lodi of Atletico Madrid and Sergio Reguilón of Spuds (really of RM,, as they get him back in 18 months) Alex Sandro is 30 years old in 7, 8 weeks, and has only a year or so left at top level after this season. I guess to round out the top 10 would be Ferland Mendy of RM.. Watch out for the 18yo Nuno Mendes of Sporting Lisbon, beast in the making. I hope we go for him as Ben's understudy and then dump both Alonso and Emerson. I see very little hate directed at him (Chilwell) at all hopefully the same goes down with Declan (and we pay a fair price too, which is around £60-70m for me)
