The "cup-tied" rule

My dad and I were discussing the FA's current rule of players being "cup-tied" when we sign them, and that we can's use them because they already played in one round of the cup. What's the fucking point of this rule. I mean, does anyone actually matter they played that one game, and it makes them unavailable??

The same goes for UEFA as well with the Champions League. David Luiz can't play for us because he already played for Benfica in the group stages! Why does this rule have to exist??? It's probably just a prevention of seeing the best players performing for new clubs, or it's probably just a rule where teams can't strengthen while the competition is happening.

But in my eyes, it's just a stupid rule!!

I agree daft rule. Especially the CL. The knock out phase of the CL is different to the group stage. I could understand it if there was no transfer window. Daft that there's only one window to sign players, then you pay millionsin transfer and wages for them not to play. I thought the point of the CL was to see the best players in the world playing in it. The end of the January transfer window should = clean slate in terms of being cup tied in any competition

I think with the Champions League you're allowed to register one player who's played in a European Competition after the window. We picked Torres. So in that aspect, there is some leeway.

but its when d player has played in Europa league den only he is allowed to play in CL................. if the player has appeared for club in cl den he cant play in CL wid anoder club...............

I'm pretty sure anyone who has played in the UCL that season can't register - for instance, Arshavin signed for Arsenal in January 2009, but because he played for Zenit in the group stages, he was cup-tied. I think you're right in the instance of signing, for example, two players who had played in the Europa League; you could select either of them to play.

Yeah that was the one. If you sign someone who's played in the Europa League and you're in the Champions League then you can register 1. Luiz played for Benfica in the Champions League and Europa League, that's why we couldn't register him anyway.
