Sir Alex Ferguson appears to have taken another veiled swipe at title rivals Chelsea, as he states Manchester United would have developed John Mikel Obi ‘in the right way’.

Mikel famously signed a contract with United in 2005, but then challenged this to successfully move to Premier League foes Chelsea.

At Stamford Bridge, he developed into a holding midfield player having started out life as a creative talent across the middle of the park.

This transformation has not gone down too well in his native Nigeria where he was tipped to replace Jay Jay Okocha as the playmaker.

“Because of his talent and his young age we thought we could have developed him [Mikel] the right way,” Ferguson is quoted as saying on kickoffnigeria.com.

“At the time we were disappointed because we thought that Mikel would be a Manchester United player.

“But he chose Chelsea in the real sense of the matter and there was nothing we could do about that.

“In the past we have witnessed circumstances like this but you have to forget everything and move on.”
