Media agenda resumes as Luiz elbow ignored

If you thought Chelsea could not have come worse off after last night's UEFA Champions League humiliation against Paris St-Germain, then think again.

In a fractious affair that degenerated into something resembling a WWE Royal Rumble, the Blues were knocked out as the Parisiens, twice on the evening and for the third time in the tie, levelled through a looping Thiago Silva header. In a cruel twist of fate, that goal sent Laurent Blanc's side through on away goals in the same way Demba Ba's strike had done last season.

But any ill feelings will have been exacerbated by media "pundits" such as Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher resuming with their vitriolic tirades against the Club. Detractors suggest that José Mourinho is incorrect to suggest there is any sort of "campaign" against Chelsea; but with another clear penalty denied and the resumption of generic bile-spouting amongst the press, it is hard not to give credence to that theory.

The British newspapers have focused on how, when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was dismissed, nine Chelsea players were surrounding the referee. Big deal. As if such a thing has never happened before in the Champions League?

It happens at every club, right Jamie?. The irony is palpable that Carragher, and former team mate and current Liverpool bench warmer Jose Enrique would deride Chelsea for their supposed unique referee intimidation tactics.

The reason it happens is because, this season especially, referees have been so incompetent they have been sending off players for nearly having their leg broken. If you think one of your players has been nailed, at any level of the game such a reaction is entirely justified.

I maintain that Ibrahimovic was wrongly dismissed. He did not go in with studs raised, nor with two feet on the ground. Yes, he caught Oscar and that collision clearly caused some discomfort to the little Brazilian, but the Swede did not launch himself in with any particular force; neither did his demonstrate any degree of aggression. He was just unlucky to catch another player in a 50:50 challenge - certainly not a red. "Orange card" territory, one could say.

It was certainly understandable considering Oscar's reaction as to why the Blues players swarmed the referee, but let's not disregard the fact the referee already had his red card out of his pocket before John Terry and company arrived on the scene. His mind was made up.

Diego Costa, too, has played the role of pantomime villain all season, and once again his own idiocy was highlighted - but again nothing is made of any player not in Chelsea blue.

After a running confrontation with David Luiz, who not only managed to get under the Spain international's skin with his own wind-up antics but also later clearly launched an elbow on Costa. If the referee had have seen it, Luiz would have been given his marching orders, too.

Instead, the media have focused on a silly, yes, but overall harmless shove by Costa on PSG's Marquinhos, who added to the comedy value by launching himself backwards, as if attached to a zip wire and filming an outrageous fight scene for the next James Bond movie.

Of course, there was no mention of Luiz's antics, who even tried to get Costa sent off after a mistimed tackle by the Spaniard floored Thiago Silva. Mistimed rather than malicious, SIlva got up and got on with it whilst his defensive partner maintained his trademark petulant attitude throughout and was booked for trying to get Costa punished.

Costa was again the central figure when, after a mazy run, he was quite clearly tripped by Edinson Cavani. It was a moment of quality totally out of character with the rest of this turgid game, and the incredulous reaction of Costa when he realised the referee had not awarded the spot kick said everything.

Again, a referee had played centre stage on a disappointing day for Chelsea, and again on the European stage. If ever there was a call for video technologies, now the time. It isn't just Chelsea who are on the rough end of these decisions, but the Blues have had to put up with more than most.

Diego also gave Luiz a wee elbow earlier in the match which went unseen by the ref......

Regardless of who did what, the article is suggesting that only whatever a Chelsea player does gets highlighted.

I don't necessarily agree with everything in the article; I just like playing devil's advocate.

Skysports or is that Scousesports ?

They were slagging off Chelsea for getting Zlatan sent off... Carragher calls it disgraceful... Henry chipping in (but isnt he the cuut who handballed it into the net against Ireland ?)

They obviously didn't see Rooney's refereeing performance on Monday night.

Theyd never entertain the idea an ex-Chelsea player onto the panel. Cunts the lot of them and won't be happy till LFC are winning everything.

When Liverpool were in the CL we always had shot down our fucking throats was "This should be another incredible night at Anfield" when it's us we get "This is a tough night for Chelsea and they have to get it right"

Says it all.

Switch to R5 and surprise surprise its two equally odious scouse cunts Lawro and Alan Green cunting Chelsea off.

Souness was a horrible dirty scouse player. As for Neville and Carragher, a quick google search will give you countless examples of them berating refs.

Hypocritical fuckwits.

Its Chelsea keeping English clubs with a decent UEFA coeficcient

Again, that isn't what the article is about. I don't know how you didn't get that. The whole point is we're being vilified every game whilst our opponents get away with murder.

We've always been vilified to some extent...but Jose didn't help the situation by saying there is an agenda against us

He just added fuel to the fire, attracted the media's attention and put us even further under the microscope.....i'm expecting a few more Chelsea players to be sent off before the end of the season for no reason

If it was an agenda against us then they would also have to make a big deal out of Diego's push because he was indeed out of control, but there were other stuff more juicy to give emphasis to, like the red card and how we supposedly surrounded disgracefully the ref. Likewise Luiz's elbowing wasn't as interesting to them as his celebration and being sorry afterwards etc...

Agenda is a strong word to use imo, but the truth is we are indeed one of the most harshly judged clubs in Europe. Fact.
