The Specials To Reform

Coventry's legendary ska evangelists The Specials have confirmed that they will reunite for live dates this autumn. No dates have been announced as yet but the band will spend the summer rehearsing for the tour.

Speaking to the BBC, singer Terry Hall said: "Well, we're still trying to put dates together, but hopefully September/ October time. We need to spend the summer rehearsing... I think it's taken me 30 years to realise we could do it really well."

The singer believes that the reunion will remain true to the band's orginal intentions, saying: "Because I saw Patti Smith do 'Horses', and I saw The Pixies reforming... you do it with dignity or don't do it at all".

Fans were given a tantalising taste when Hall and the band's guitarist Lynval Golding played 'Gangsters' and 'A Message To You Rudy' with Lily Allen and Damon Albarn respectively at last year's Glastonbury Festival.

Not too sure about bands reforming after all those years. The Specials were a fantastic band and, in my circle, are remembered fondly, But I think its where they should remain, a fantastic memory. Not sure I want to see now middle aged guys moon stomping around to "Rudy"

Same with The Jam, Despite constant music media pressure, Paul Weller has always stated that he would never reform the band, and all power too him. Foxton and Buckler have since reformed and have a new "frontman" which I think is insulting to the memory of The Jam. The originals are still the greatest.

Madness, In my opinion, are a slightly different scale. They were more a happy go lucky band with nothing really to serious about them. Went to see them at Wembley Arena in 94 and it was kicking off all over the place! They maybe get away with it because of their laid back attitude to their songs, But I think The Jam and The Specials had for more meaning to them.

Personally, I'd rather die than pay to watch the Stones, its not even funny any more with those cunts, and the prices they charge as well, Never been my scene anyway but they do seem to get right on my top bollocks. Thats maybe a bit hypocritical as I've been to see The Who plenty times over the last few years and I fucking love it. Even sadly without the Ox and Moonie.

I go to see Weller when he comes to Glasgow and, In my opinion, He is still bang on the nail. Still very relevant.

True. Saw The Jam couple of times and I dont think the present lineup or anything Weller does will ever top that. To give Foxton and Buckler a bit of slack -they did ask Weller several times to do it again. Whilst Paul Weller was carving out a lucrative career either Foxton or Buckler, forget which, was borassic, and carving furniture in his garage on some documentary or other.

Wouldn't see the Rolling Stones now -almost a parody of themselves -but saw them twice in 70s and 1982 - at their peak, and unbelievable atmosphere. There was some Who concert on TV a year ago ? still have it- and even Daltrey can still cut it.

Agree about Madness they have a 'not take it seriously' angle that lasts -unbelievable the amount of top ten hits and No 1s they had as well

True mate, In terms in single's success, Madness practically had it all and fair play to them.

After The Jam split, Foxton had a couple of small solo hits then, after a couple of years, Joined up with Stiff Little Fingers, where he stayed for a number of years. Buckler created a band called "Time UK" and had one moderate hit before he gave it up and went into furniture restoration. Weller certainly didnt cover himself in glory in the way he treated the other two, He never contacted either of them for donkey's years after the split, Which left them rather bitter over the whole affair. Think he was back on speaking terms now with Foxton at least..........................until of course they kept badgering him to reform the band, which he dismissed out of hand, Only for the other two to find a new frontman, Which Weller found laughable, So no chance of any more Christmas cards then!

AS for Terry Hall, If we think of Madness as Laid back and able to laugh at themselves........Fun Boy Three anyone?!
