changingman2000 35
....through the ranks at Chels. Thinking back, I can recall Paul Cannoville, Paul Hughes, Jody Morris, Mark Nicolls, Damien Matthews, David Lee, Craig Burley and Andy Myers. I remember Ruud being very complimentry about Mark Nicolls after he scored in the 6-1 humping of the Yids at Three Point Lane, and certain "pundits" thinking Rodney Trotter looked ever so much like Alan Hansen (if Only). I was at the game against Leicester at the Bridge during the terrace and away fan ban when Rodney scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 win, also remember him scoring a long range free kick againt Man Ure at the shed end in the early 90's (only for Le Frog Cantona to equalise a couple of mins later)
Elliott 7
Define made through? Because some of those players played a fair few games for the club, such as Jody Morris. How about Carlton Cole? Or Neil Clement?

changingman2000 35
true, Carlton Cole had the promise of Osgood I heard one "expert" mention when he broke through. Clement never really got his chance as such did he. Dalla Bona must rue the time he left Chels as he's done fuck all since, Very, very good prospect when he got in the first team though. Neil Shipperly's another who I thought had a chance with us for a while. Who was the Ginger Haired scottish young lad, mid 90's, cant fucking remember his name now, David Hopkin(s) maybe? Elliott 7
David Hopkins rings a bell CM, you might be right there. I can't think of anyone else who came through our youth team and made an impact in my time, apart from Michael Duberry, but I would say perhaps he did make it before we sold him on. Aye "Doobs" made a good number of appearance's before he was eventually deemed surplus. Probably his finest moment was against Wimbledon in the FA Cup Q/F Replay in a 2-0 win. Frank Sinclair? At least he gave 100% and was versatile. Did like the odd own goal as I recall Edited March 18, 2008 by changingman2000

Ollie 4,400
David hopkin, i remember him mostly for scoring crystal palaces winner in the 1997 play off final vs sheffield united with a last minute wonder goal. he didnt do too bad for us but i didnt see him much because i only got into Chelsea at the end of 94. Jody Morris was my fav tho, more my era really he was pretty much a first teamer from 97-2000 really since scoring that goal at blackpool in the coca cola cup or whatever it was called then in 1996. Doobs is another that stands out because again, he was pretty much first team, i'll never forget his shot against the bar against man utd in that semi tho at villa park and that fucking own goal vs liecester when steve guppy decided to become world class for a few seconds. Mark Nicholls kinda dissappeared without warning, he had class. His finishes against coventry and yids were like hes been playing for years. If the likes of Doobs, Paul Hughes, Morris, Granville, Nicholls etc etc were a bit earlier, say 92-95 like Sinclair, Newton, Myers, they wouldve got more of a chance but Chelsea were changing a lot from 96-98. I'd liked to have seen Leon Knight given a chance, he looked very defoe like to me. Couldve done better for himself. In Fact, even Mikael Forssel couldve been one of our best ever strikers, the start of his Chelsea career was electric.
Elliott 7
Ah, yeah, how could I forget Forssell? So much potential, so many injuries.

I don't think he came through the youth set up.

Doesn't mean they can't do a good job for this club, but it's too soon. It's very rare that a top club has a player break through so young. So in short, these players aren't good enough... yet, and were never going to be good enough yet.
changingman2000 35
Last I heard of Harley, He was at Sheffield Utd. I rated Forssell and I think he would have got his chance if it wasnt for Roman's wedge. Jody Morris, by the way, Is currently on St Johnstone's books

Look at Drogba - no-one considered him world class till last season when we was 29. Very much the same as Makelele, he peaked at 31.
Ollie 4,400
i know luca brought granville from cambridge but he was still a good young english player. think he's still at palace. John Harley's at Burnley went everywhere after us. Sheffield United, Fulham etc. He played well for Burnley vs Arsenal in the FA Cup this season. I remember he got a winner for us against dirty leeds at Ellant Road. Great win that was.
