Chelsea manager Avram Grant has conceded he knows he must win either the Premier League or the Champions League to remain in his position of manager at Stamford Bridge...

Two weeks ago, the Blues — domestic cup specialists in recent years — were out-thought, out-fought and outplayed at Wembley against Juande Ramos' resurgent Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, succumbing in extra time to a Michael Dawson header, having been pegged back by a Dimitar Berbatov penalty in the second half after leading in the first through a Didier Drogba free-kick.

The capitulation, the lack of tactical nous or would-be urgency from Grant produced a plethora of merciless criticism from the moment the final whistle sounded. Many have been on their toes waiting for the Israeli — who has lost just four times since taking over from Jose Mourinho as manager — to slip so they could prey on the charmless antithesis to their 'Special One', who is loved now in equal measure with which he was loathed during his time in England.

For Grant and for Chelsea, the worst was yet to come. Though the Blues first contained Olympiacos in a goalless affair in Greece before bringing them back to the Bridge to crucify them 3-0 in a fashion most befitting of Grant's reign: efficient, with no signs of extravagance, exuberance or over-exertion, they then contrived to crash out of the FA Cup to Barnsley.

Within a fortnight, competing on four fronts as they had last season has quickly been whittled down to two — and it's the two they've looked least likely to win, at that. The last eight of the Champions League is a magnificent place to be; but with Grant's primary weakness as a manager appearing to be big games, the future is less than bright. And though their consistency in the league has been admirable, Manchester United and Arsenal have remained a cut above Roman Abramovich's club throughout the season, with few looking at the title race as anything other than a two-horse race.

The Barnsley loss has compounded Grant's misery and there have been rumours of a crisis meeting held at Chelsea's training ground by Grant to get to the bottom of his side's failure. Meanwhile Roman Abramovich — who could only bother to watch such sub-standard opposition on television — was 'incensed' at the manner of the loss, according to a source close to the Russian billionaire.

Grant, who left the field on Saturday to choruses of Jose Mourinho's name, admitted: "I will accept it. When I am responsible for the team, and when my team loses at Barnsley, there will be many negative things said about it. On the other hand, we have two major competitions left. I am concentrating on them, not other things. But this is a massive disappointment.

"I'm the manager and I'm responsible for everything, It's very sad because we'd played so well in the last week. This team has shown they can play good football. They did it against West Ham and Olympiakos, good teams. The team that played at Barnsley, even though we had a lot of injuries, was good enough to win."

One man who has leapt to the defense of the under fire manager is new signing Nicolas Anelka, who contests that a first eleven consisting of ten internationals are to blame instead of the manager.

"The tactics were right and the criticism should be aimed at the players," said Anelka, who started at Oakwell but failed to live up to his hype. "It is not about the manager, it is the players. We have spoken about the Champions League before and we will try our best to win it because, when you look around the dressing room, we have big players. I think Barnsley will be forgotten if we win the Champions League."

Former Barcelona and now Chelsea assistant Henk ten Cate, who was brought in seemingly upon the request of Abramovich, who wishes to create his own Barcelona at Chelsea, has also been under pressure as of late, as he was involved in a training ground bust-up with club captain John Terry.

He is also feeling the pressure, voicing his concerns over the level of expectation in English football's top tier: "One bad run of results and you're out. You just can't afford to lose here. I came to Chelsea because I was looking for peace. I wanted to work at the top level and at the same time I was looking for peace."

With the Premier League looking a tall order as Chelsea must face both Manchester United and Arsenal in their remaining games, one thing is for sure: all Blue eyes will be on the Champions League draw for the quarterfinals this Friday, with Chelsea no doubt praying to avoid English counterparts, and instead drawing the likes of Schalke or Fenerbache.

Though Schalke and Fenerbache, to their credit, are champions of their respective countries, while Barnsley are not even leading in the second tier of English football — so who knows.

2arses fucked up yesterday if we had a decent manager i'd say we've a very good chance of winning the league, and maybe just maybe the CL as well.

but with this gormless cunt there's no chance of winning anything, the only good thing to come out of this it probaly means the end for the thick cunt.

I would be suprised if he gets the boot before the end of the season now! But there is no doubt that he should be gone now in the summer no matter what happens now! 2 cups gone which should have been ours at a stroll!!! Even though the Prem is opening up i can't see us winning and once we draw one of the big boys in the CL we can kiss that goodbye as well!!!

It really is crazy, we have 2 fantastic performances in the middle of 2 dismal ones where we squander 2 cups that should have been ours for the taking.....

For me there is no way out of this, there is no way we are going to win the CL with Grant in charge, it just won't happen! And we are not going to be consistant enough to win the Prem either..

I just can't wait till the summer now! There needs to be some MAJOR reconstruction work going on..

Michael Laudrup mentioned for the job yesterday. Thoughts on that?

Can't say i have any knowledge of him as a manager so i have no idea how i would feel about that! But at the moment, anyone else is sounding pretty good.

But what we need is someone who we KNOW is going to bring us what we need.

What is lacking above all is someone who can build a rapport and respect from the squad. Clarke has no charsima no mutual meeting of the mind with players, but knows his football. Ten Cates has to fuck off for a fag every now and then and is a moody cunt at best-again knows his football though. Grant, just a 'B' movie blob monster.

Wenger, Ferguson, Mourinho all know how to get the best from their players. We have no one atm, but have a talented squad of loose cannons.

Best thing that could happen right now would be to make Terry player manager for the rest of the season. Clarke can sort out the substitutions.

A full overhaul is needed in the summer!

We need to completely change the set up and bring someone in who can shake things up, and also make big choices because there are going to need to be some big name casualties in the summer.

This should include Abramovich being told by someone who's not afraid to jeorpordise their multi million pound salary that he should not interfere with the football side. To not take Essien aside and tell him how to tackle , for instance, to not appoint a fellow Jew just because he put the cones out for another Russian Jewish oligarch.

Will take someone with big bollocks.
