Renew hope for our climate!

Peace.

Someone passed me the following link and I thought I would share it with you :

« Right now a major fight for our future is blowing up in Australia -- the government is about to pass a law that would dramatically cut carbon emissions and get polluters to foot the bill. But big businesses, backed by Rupert Murdoch, who owns nearly three-quarters of Australia’s press, are trying to kill the bill.

This carbon price legislation is clever and is the latest great solution to our climate crisis -- it will push polluters towards clean and efficient production while supporting Australian families. And if we win in Australia we can inspire our leaders across the globe to adopt similar laws. Our best chance to influence this climate clash is to drown out Murdoch’s fear-mongering across the media with our messages of hope from across the world, and save the law.

This battle is being fought on the Australian air waves right now. Sign the urgent petition to support this bold initiative -- when we reach 250,000 signatures, we’ll run inspiring radio ads that deliver our messages and dispel the myths about this carbon price legislation. »

So basically, if you could sign the petition, it will be well appreciated. And that won't even take you 10 secondes of your time.

For those who are interested, here you go : - Sign the Petition -

Thanks ~

What exactly will this bill do though?

I managed to gather random information :

  • It will be applied to the big polluters.
  • The tax will be up to 23 AUD per ton of CO2 ( 23 AUD => €17,2 / £15 ).
  • Nearly 500 polluting companies will be taxed.
  • Agricultural and forest companies won't be taxed.
  • They will create a fund to finance the decarbonization of the country of 10 billions (I presume it is in AUD, so £6,5 billions). This fund will be used to : provide fiscal assistance and advices in purpose to decrease the energy consumption of the households ; provide compensations for mining/electrician/steelmaker companies ; provide an assistance to the development of the renewable energies.
  • In 2015, this tax should leave the way to the quota of CO2 emission.
  • Julia Gillard, the prime minister, hopes to decrease the CO2 emission of 150 millions of tons (untill 2020).

I hope to have answered... And sorry for the broken english, the vocabulary used isn't familiar to me..

Signed it.

Studying Geography has helped me appreciate the environmental conundrum we face.

Those who dismiss it aren't unintelligent beings, they are merely just ignorant to something which needs much more exposure. I don't think 99% of the population of MEDCs realise the damaging consequences of pollutants, but that is down to a lack of media promotion, in my opinion.
