This president's approval rating is obviously not high..at all. A poll conducted by television channel Syfy asked around 2,000 people to list their top heroes and villains and Blatter got the top spot on the list of bad guys. FIFA's head man racked up 9.2% of the votes. Tiger Woods wasn't too far behind him at #4.

President Barack Obama, L.A. Galaxy player David Beckham, and Price William finished 1-2-3 on the list of heroes.

Since Blatter took over as president of soccer's governing body in 1998 controversies have followed him, almost from the very start.

CNN released a story in 2002 that the vice president of the Somalian football association told a British newspaper he was offered $100,000 to vote for Blatter. While Farah Addo did not accept the offer, he alleged that:

"Eighteen African voters accepted bribes to vote for Blatter."

Then there was the incident in 2004 when Blatter gave his thoughts on ways to improve the popularity of women's soccer:

Football's most senior administrator attracted the wrath of the women's game last night by suggesting female players wear tighter shorts to promote "a more female aesthetic".

Sepp Blatter, the president of the world governing body FIFA, said women should have skimpier kit to increase the popularity of the game. "Let the women play in more feminine clothes like they do in volleyball," he said.

"They could, for example, have tighter shorts. Female players are pretty, if you excuse me for saying so, and they already have some different rules to men – such as playing with a lighter ball. That decision was taken to create a more female aesthetic, so why not do it in fashion?"

In 2006 Blatter skipped the trophy presentation at the World Cup because he was afraid of being "whistled".

2009 brought the famous "handball" incident by French player and legend Thierry Henry that gave France a spot in the 2010 World Cup and robbed Ireland of one. The way Blatter handled Ireland's request to be the 33rd team in the tournament angered many.

The Republic were beaten by France in their play-off by a goal which should have been disallowed due to Thierry Henry's handball and Blatter this week revealed that the Republic were bidding to be installed as a 33rd team at the World Cup.

Brady said the Football Association of Ireland, having already had calls for a replay rejected, had expected FIFA to consider the "33rd team" request in private, rather than go public with it, and he expressed dismay at the way Blatter has dealt with the saga since Giovanni Trapattoni's side were cruelly knocked out.

Explaining the decision to approach Fifa and ask to be included in the World Cup draw, Brady revealed the FAI knew the request was likely to be dismissed.

"I think when we asked for that we knew there was very little chance of that happening," he said. "We asked because we wanted to have them respond in a measured way, and see what they had to say.

"After all Mr Blatter was responsible for the [match] official. He didn't say anything about the appalling mistake the official made to miss a blatant handball."

Last year we found out of an alleged deal that would see Europe host the 2018 World Cup.

England's hopes of landing the 2018 World Cup received a major boost last night as it emerged FIFA bosses are arm-twisting to ensure the tournament goes to Europe.

While President Sepp Blatter will not order the non-European bidders to withdraw from the race, the FIFA chief has cut an unofficial deal with UEFA head Michel Platini that will see the other would-be hosts choosing to battle for the 2022 tournament.

Should the USA, Australia and Japan stay in the race – South Korea, Indonesia and Qatar are only bidding for 2022 – they will find themselves frozen out and not given any backing by the FIFA High Command, damaging their chances of being serious contenders for the second tournament.

After Russia was awarded the 2018 World Cup he, in-not-so-many-words, called England sore losers for their reactions.

Blatter also rejected allegations of corruption at football's governing body after England gained only two out of 22 votes from Fifa's executive committee.

"I was surprised by all the English complaining after the defeat. England, of all people, the motherland of fair play ideas," Blatter said.

"Now some of them are showing themselves to be bad losers."

Blatter told Swiss magazine Weltwoche: "You can't come afterwards and say so and so promised to vote for England. The results are known. The outcome came out clearly."

Despite all of this, the only competition Blatter had for a fourth term as FIFA president pulled his name out of the running this past May. Blatter was re-elected as president on June 1st. Sigh.
