I never dispensed your argument that we are obsessed with being fair. All I am saying is it is not fair to call the Indians racist just because they want a fair bride (although this happens with only narrow minded Indians. Not all Indians are like that). White people are obsessed with tanned skin. So? It's a human tendency to want what you don't have. Why do you see people sunbathing?

India is a racist country no doubt but to say they are racist because they are obsessed with being fair is Wrong.

90% of Indians would go bezerk if someone in their family married a white girl or had a white girl friend. That proves that they aren't obsessed with Fair skin.

Why are South Indians referred to derogatorily as "kaalia"? It's often passed off as being merely in innocence and jest, but is it really? I don't think so, not in some cases any way. Have you seen the way in which Blacks are portrayed in the entertainment mediums here? Tell me that's not due to an inherent superiority complex we feel we have over them.

And you say most people would 'go bezerk' if someone from the family happened to have a white girlfriend. Why so? Is that not unfair bias against a race?

The white skin bias for me is a metaphor for our approval of anything and everything Western. I never said all Indians are racist, that is naturally impossible in any country of the world. Certainly there's little or no racial violence here, unless the subject of race gets mixed with alleged religious propaganda, which is a volatile cocktail (eg. Graham Staines,1999).

But 90% of indians would not have a white guy or a woman marry member of their family which makes you wonder if they are as obsessed as you are trying to potray them? Yes the word means 'black' but it's not the word itself, it's the way in which it is spoken that gives away the true intention behind saying it. "Ae kaalia idhar aa" is racist as far as I'm concerned.

The U.S.-Mexico fan distribution at the Rose Bowl a few weeks back says otherwise. The situation is very similar to the Turks in Germany, ignored for so long that they created their own social constructs. Both sides chose to be separate, so it isn't surprising that some Latinos don't identify themselves as Americans.

I agree, but the process will be extremely difficult. There may be second generation American-born who don't see themselves as American, yet go to American schools, etc. The legal ramifications alone would cause aneurysms. The politicians will never address the problem because it's "controversial" and they don't want to lose votes.

The problem is, some of them aren't. They grow up in the Latino social constructs separated from the rest of society and end up speaking broken English even though they were born here.
