The defensive organization of this team has been the most disappointing aspect, IMO. I know people are going to come and tell me that we have shit defenders and all that and they are not wrong and maybe I've been spoilt by past Chelsea teams that actually know how to defend, but christ, unless we're able to dominate possession and pin back opponents, we're just so useless in being defensively solid when we need to. It's like we don't even do defensive work in training and drill defensive tactics/nous into the players. Kante and Hazard aside, I'm not sure there's much difference between the XI that played today and the XI that played in the R16 1st leg against Barcelona 2 years ago: Courtois - Rudiger/Christensen/Azpi - Alonso/Kante/Fabregas/Moses - Hazard/Willian/Pedro Caballero - Rudiger/Christensen/Azpi - Alonso/Jorginho/Kovacic/James - Barkley/Mount/Giroud But the defensive organization of the two sides were night and day.

Bayern were always expected to win this over two legs but it would have been nice if we had set up more competently (the team don't look defensively well drilled at all, even taking the individual disasters into account) and made it difficult for them. A little pragmatism would not have hurt. Now the shit part is, we still have the 2nd leg to play. Can we just forfeit it and take the 3-0 loss?

Yeah, he wasn't great for the 2 goals but you're asking for trouble if you just give a team like Bayern all the space to play through you and press them like idiots.

Also, the back 3 has been disastrous today. Midfield of Kovacic & Jorginho are getting outgunned and it's so easy for Bayern to play through the flanks because there's only the WBs there.

Even taking the individual disasters into account, the defensive organization has been an absolute joke. The pressing is all over the place, Jorginho & Kovacic are two absolute ghosts in midfield and the front 3 are just...never mind...

He's the vice captain, supposedly a leader in the side and yet reacted stupidly to get himself booked and will now miss the 2nd leg.

GIVE HIM THE THREE-YEAR CONTRACT!

Pulisic and CHO would have been very useful against Bayern's relatively high defensive line...

I'm hoping Lampard has done some work to make this work against Bayern and not continued with the back 3 simply because it worked in the last game. Leipzig recently played the back 3 against Bayern and got repeatedly torn apart down their right with Alphonso Davies running riot, before they sorted themselves out at HT and got the better of Bayern in the second half.

IIRC, this will be the 3rd time this season that we're playing the back 3 in back-to-back games. Previous 2 occasions saw us win the 1st game but lose the 2nd one. Pray it goes well this time...
