Valdes

He had been having his best season ever and was the bedrock of Barcelona's success.

But what the Catalan fans did not expect to find at the end of their Champions League game were his mummified remains just inside the 6 yard box.

The astonishing remains, found long after the final whistle, are believed to be a first in Champions League football. Forensic investigators have the pointed the finger at a complete lack of movement for a sustained period combined with severe boredom as causing the tragedy.

Club Medic Alfonso Garcia 'we knew that our defenders wouldn't see much of the ball but to lose a player in this way is very sad'.

'The players have been training all week for this kind of situation, but nothing can prepare you for this, seeing Arsenal choke on the big stage again was just too much for them' he continued.

Valdes had been the Barcelona keeper since 2006 and had appeared in countless one sided games over the years, but experts believe that Arsenal's intricate passing and complete inability to launch dangerous long balls into the box was the final straw.

A reserve player came across the body, which was dressed in full kit and a vest with a sock on the right foot, and immediately alerted authorities.

'It's just shocking,' manager Pep Guardiola told reporters. 'we were a bit worried when he didn't move for the late Arsenal chance but we just assumed that he'd seen that it was Nicolas Bentner'.

UEFA had been warned of the risks after three Barcelona defenders had fallen asleep during the 2008 Champions League final between the two sides but had been assured by Arsenal officials that this time would be different.

Officials have promised to launch a full enquiry and have granted Barcelona's request to play the rest of this seasons competition without a goalkeeper as a silent tribute to their fallen comrade.
