Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is not in negotiations to buy Sampdoria, a statement from the Serie A side confirmed on Tuesday.

Reports in Italian newspaper ‘Il Giornale’ claimed that Abramovich would buy the Genoa-based club and then install former player Roberto Mancini as manager.

The speculation is fanciful, according to Sampdoria, who also reiterated that the club’s president Dr Riccardo Garrone was not looking to sell his shares in the club.

"In reference to rumors that appeared today [Tuesday] in the newspaper 'Il Giornale’, Sampdoria states that they are devoid of any foundation," read the statement.

"The company also reiterates that the possibility of a sale is not the intention of the president Dr Riccardo Garrone or the club's shareholders."
