Fulham Broadway 17,361
Venables left school in the summer of 1958 and signed for Chelsea as an apprentice at the age of 15. He won the FA Youth Cup with Chelsea in consecutive seasons, as they beat Preston North End in 1960 and Everton in 1961. He made his much anticipated senior debut in a 4–2 defeat to West Ham United on 6 February 1960, with newspapers billing him as "the new Duncan Edwards". He took his FA coaching badges at the age of 24, passing with distinction and a 95% pass mark. He went on to lift the League Cup with Chelsea, and scored a penalty against Leicester City in the two-legged final. Chelsea also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup in 1964–65 ''1966, Inter Cities Fairs Cup… look it up,' he says. 'We (Chelsea) won the first leg 4-1 at Stamford Bridge. It was a good game for me (Venables scored a hat-trick). They kicked us a lot, we went down to 10 men after Eddie McCreadie punched one of them in retaliation. It was hard out there. They really cranked it up, showered our coach with bricks and bottles. We hid down under our seats'' He went on to manage Barcelona, England Spuds, Palace, Boro and Australia.
