Didier Drogba and Michael Essien have missed out on the 2007 African Player of the Year award. The winner, named at a ceremony in Ghana, was Frederic Kanouté.

The Chelsea pair plus the Mali and Sevilla striker were the three nominated players for the accolade which is run by the Confederation of African Football. Voting is conducted by the national coaches from 53 African countries.

Drogba was the 2006 winner and runner-up in 2005.

Mali exited the African Cup of Nations on Tuesday when they lost their final group game to Ivory Coast.

The quarter-finals are on Sunday with Ghana playing Nigeria at 5pm and Ivory Coast facing Guinea at 8.30pm.
