Why do we even have a youth system? What is its purpose?

Isn't the whole idea of having one to ensure that the club has the best young talent coming through to and progressing to the first team? We have a youth team who have won pretty much every competition there is to be won and yet the club is terrified of playing them. If Rashford/Iheanacho were Chelsea youth players they would be playing in Vitesse right now and not the first team.  

instead of spending almost 60m on a defender surely it would make sense to try one of our youth players? We need someone to have the balls to give these kids a chance. They've proven they're good by winning every competion out there so please give them a chance and stop wasting crazy money on players who might not make it.
