So why are we basing this performance from Spurs as evidence they will leapfrog us? Even under Poch Spurs managed to get the better of City. Only difference is that with Poch they played decent football and offered something that we could genuinly worry about.

This was the most smash and grab performance I've seen from Spurs and Mourinho.

Like I said, no need to fear Spurs with Mourinho.

City winning is probably the ideal result with recent developments.

Bring Leicester closer to the chasing back and open up the race for three places rather than two.

Leicester have won only 3 of their last 11 league games but still have a 10-point lead over 5th...

Why squad rotation is a difficult balancing act

Chris Wilder's Sheffield United have exhibited many qualities this season: discipline, intelligent use of resources, focused recruitment and commitment to a distinctive pattern of play. Crucially though, they have also been the Premier League's most settled team.

United have made the fewest starting XI changes of any team with 30, and are the only team in the division to start with the same formation in every game according to Opta.

Wilder's team sit just one point behind fifth-placed Tottenham and two behind Chelsea in a Champions League place, with European qualification an increasingly realistic prospect. The two London clubs meet at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, while United host Brighton later in the day in a presentable chance to gain ground.

Should the newly-promoted club find themselves on a European tour next season, maintaining their stability of selection could prove challenging. On the other hand, while the importance of squad rotation is always stressed, a look across the Premier League shows too many changes can prove detrimental.

It is striking that three of the clubs exceeding expectations this season - Sheffield United, Burnley and Wolves - have made the fewest changes. Wolves deserve particular credit given they are on the brink of the Europa League last-16, and could prove an exemplary case for United to follow should they finish in the top six.

Liverpool and Leicester, practically the only other teams enjoying their season, have also made relatively few changes. Liverpool have made the 11th most changes with 47 and Leicester 14th with 44.

Arsenal and Chelsea feature high in the table with 62 and 63 changes respectively. Arsenal have been through their worst run of league form since before the First World War while Chelsea have picked up just 15 points from 14 games since November's international break.

Manchester City have made the most changes with 81. Par for the course you might think given their luxurious squad, but not so. In their 'Centurion' season two years ago Pep Guardiola made 99 changes in the entire campaign, fewer than five teams. When they defended the title last season, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham made more changes than City. Those three teams all suffered post-March collapses.

It is worth remembering that while changes are associated with rotation, many are enforced due to injuries, such as City scrambling for solutions without Aymeric Laporte.

Burning players out is undesirable, but inconsistent selection can also lead to inconsistent results. It is a delicate balancing act.
