Facts mate, state of defenders is shocking compared to yester-years, non comparable.

Yesteryears defenders by inlarge played in deeper lines with one sometimes two defensive midfielders. Most teams these days especially at the top ask fullbacks to push on, CB's to split and have a preference for a more DLP infront of them as opposed to a "traditional DM". The demands of a CB in this day in age are infinity times higher.

How many years are we looking in the past though?

AC Milan had for instance Pirlo as a DLP and Cafu as a RB going forward, while also Jankulovski went forward. Maldini and Nesta were very comfortable even when they were both old.

Maldini, Nesta or Baresi could defend, could dribble past players, play great passes and score high level goals with their feet. You can't ask for more than that

Is it just me or do Everton and Spuds have a pretty comparable XI in terms of quality? Both look decent but miles away from the top teams.

Lets see if Carlo is finally the one who can get Everton to perform against a "big" team here. Would love if he spoiled Mourinho's opening weekend.

That's kind of my point, there's elite defenders then just like there is now only then there appeared to be more due to the systems, just like today wingers look better due to being able to play close to goal compared to back then and alas produce better numbers.

Any defender who can stand out in this era playing for teams that play high split defenders football deserve all the praise they get, VVD's peak may have been a bit later/shorter (depending on whether you think his current form is just a rut or him bottoming out) but for 18 months he was almost flawless. I hate Liverpool as much as the next Chelsea fan but people sound silly by being so dismissive of him.

Last generation could do this as well imo, but the style yes might have been different but they were still a quality above in the art of defending, timing, positional sense etc.

not being dismissive of him, he is still the best CB on the planet, but not an all-time great

he is in a rut

I will not yet call it a perma-slide though, that will take a lot more games to make that big of a call
