Why not all three?

that would not be the worst thing to happen but to be honest i have my reservations about costa. 32 mil for a 25 year old striker who has had 1 good season in his career and that too in a league where soldado scored 30 goals in all competitions in the last season. knowing our luck with strikers, it might as well end up screwing us up once more.

another thing that bothers me is having 3 strikers for a pre-dominantly 1 striker system. for a striker to be succesful in PL, one of the main things is consistency which goes out of the window.

the 3rd and probably the most worrying thing would be LUKAKU. among our recent crop of 4 strikers, he would probably be our best goal scoring options, still somehow he ended up on loan. i have no doubt that in this scenario, lukaku would end up being our 3rd option and would waste a whole year of his development.

Drogba was 25/6 when he had his first good season, Costa's had a good two seasons. Unlike Soldado or Falcao goals have never been the sole aspect to his game, and we'd be signing a player who is improving- as opposed to someone who is past their best (Torres, Eto'o...) or too young (Lukaku) so I don't think/hope he wouldn't flop-seems pretty suited to English football too

I think 3 strikers is needed for cover and as Mourinho likes the option to play 2 up front, ideally we'd have a third choice capable of playing in other positions

not every striker can be a DD. torres was bought when he was 26 too (not at all past his prime). same goes with BA. he was banging goals for fun, was the highest goal scorer in PL, probably got a couple against arsenal too on the new year's day, but has been a flop after coming to CFC.

3 strikers in good to have when there is some1 like BA who is willing to sit on the bench for the major part of the season. dont think any of nando (sulk-master), lukaku (he dint want to be sitting on the bench when he was 17 with DD, anelka, torres and sturridge as our options) or costa would be willing to play that role. also schurrle is a good enough 3rd striker option if need be.

True, it's pretty hard to predict how strikers will develop. Torres was out of form for Liverpool when he signed here, would hardly say Ba was banging goals in for fun, he had a decent record for Newcastle- was shifted out wide for Cisse. He's the kind of player who's going to mostly be anonymous aside from popping up to get a goal. i wouldn't say he;s been a flop, he just isn't a top class striker which we new when we signed him, he'd get goals with an extended run in a team lower down the league.

Yeah, ideally I think we'd have Costa, Lukaku and Ba/Schrulle- but the diffuculty is getting rid of Torres and Ba is easier to move on

there is an exclusive article in The Times saying that talks over a new deal have failed to get off the ground, and Rooney is flattered by Chelsea's continuing interest. Can't read the entire article though

And I've found something interesting in The Telegraph: "Even if United refuse to sell, Rooney would have the option of exploring the possibility of buying himself out of the final year of his contract.

Under Article 17 of Fifa’s regulations for the status and transfer of players, a player who signed a contract before the age of 28 is entitled to buy himself out of the contract three years after the deal was signed.
Rooney was 24 when he signed his last United contract on Oct 22, 2010, so his so-called ‘protected period’ officially ended on Oct 22, 2013.
To avoid Fifa sanctions, Rooney would have to serve United with his intention to leave within 15 days of the final Premier League game of the season on May 11.
Such a move would be costly to Rooney, whose United deal is worth £250,000 a week, but he could demand a huge signing on fee by effectively moving as a free agent.
United are seventh in the Premier League table, five points behind fourth-placed Liverpool and have lost their last three games. Chelsea are third, two points off leaders Arsenal and have won their last four matches."
Now, I don't really know the rules, but "buying himself out of the final year of his contract" I think it means paying United those 12 months he is left in his contract. 12 months x £250,000 a week equals a total of £12million. I don't really expect Rooney to pay that from his own money, if you know what I mean, but sounds like a good deal for me. Add £8million to that, his signing on fee, and this would go to a total of £20million deal. Good piece of business if you ask me, he'll be 29 in the next season though, but still with two or three top seasons in his pocket.

There's a chat going on Twitter about this right now.

Apparently it's not as clear cut as that article suggests and would apparently include his 'market value' included in any attempt to buy himself out. How you arrive at that would be fairly complicated but the bottom line is that he probably could force a move if he wanted to.

Bear in mind that he never actually submitted a formal transfer request last time so going about it this other way would be unlikely, or at least a last resort. United's current predicament could impact a lot of their transfer dealings over the next couple of windows.

Yeah, I read about this the other day. Like TOPTB said, it's not as simple as it first sounds. I think it could be a good card to pressure utd into a move but I doubt Wayne will actually do it.

I think united won't make top 4 and Rooney will be gone in the summer one way or the other. I think if we really want him we will get him.

We'll be back in for him come the summer, no doubt about that. Unless United have a major up turn in form their is absolutely nothing at United for him now, nothing at all. Even an up turn in form won't be enough because I think they will be finishing 5th/6th this season, they just lack everything from top to bottom. He's surrounded now by bog standard average players, and with that will come sub-standard performances, sub-standard league position with a sub-standard manager.

He'd be immense here as a lone striker.

Now I see. Would have been too easy I guess and this saga has "go the hard way!" written all over it.
