Its not fake. USA is a huge country. Many people there just dont give a damm about what happen around the wolrd. Im pretty sure you can find the same answears in UK. Some americans believe that USA is the center of the world, and some european guys do the same about Europe.

Ask a random guy in England or in Nedherlands if he knows whats the Brazil´s capital, where is Kyrghystan, where is Nigeria.

I have heard lots of tales abour brazilians who travel to Europe or USA, and when return says that people in these countrys are stupids, because people dont where Brazil is, some doesnt even know that this country exist, some think its in Africa, some people dont know there are white people here, and some dont know that we speak portuguese and not spanish. But some of these brazilians who complain, cant say where is Nova Delhi or Guyana ( very close to Brazil)...

Plus, USA is the country who has some of the best universities in the world, invest a huge amount of money on education, send man to moon, is the country where Rock and Roll was born...so, they are not that stupid.

Maybe I'm just generalising. I'm lucky to know a lot of well-educated people and I could happily say 90% of my relatives, friends and classmates will know the capital of Brazil (if they don't, its pretty ignorant considering Brazil has the world's largest natural resource blanket and its fifth fastest-growing economy, and is likely to undermine the USA's dominance of Latin America through its emerging status as a (rival) regional superpower).

Hell, I'd put £100 on my six-year-old nephew knowing how many sides a triangle has!

But that being said, I absolutely agree with you Henrique. There are many people who are pretty darn dumb! Not necessarily through any fault of their own - the British education system (which I would vouch to be possibly the best in Europe - and possibly the world) until twenty years ago was actually dog shit. Many of the current generation simply were not lucky enough to get the same quality education current Britons do, and the same can regrettably be acknowledged as a global trend.

On the other hand, some people are so hideously cocooned and oblivious to what goes on outside of their town and village and remain either pitifully- or blissfully-ignorant to the world (I'd agree with the former) - these people are the egocentrics you refer to.

I appreciate this post will come across as obnoxious and arrogant, but frankly I think my point is a valid one; general knowledge just isn't valued anymore, and a lot of the current generation were let down by their schooling. I'd actually say general ignorance is a more apt terminology.

Thankfully I'm one of the lucky ones to come from a well-educated background and I'm incredibly fortunate to go to a brilliant school. Its just a shame that this isn't the norm for everyone, because the world would be a better place - but that's a debate for another day.

Internet connectivity is very, very high in Britain. The last time I checked, the figures suggested at least four in five British people have access to the internet. We have an awful lot of broadband providers in comparison to most other European countries, and I believe our network coverage is a greater percentage of the population than in America.

We have a lot of "wi-fi zones" across the country, which are basically hotspots of high connectivity. In fact Britain has more wi-fi hotspots than anyone in the world, and more than double the amount in the USA. Of the 9000+ zones in Britain, more than 8000 are in England. Seven of the ten cities worldwide with the most wi-fi locations are British (six of which are English, and London is 1st and Manchester 3rd). Click here for more info..

I think you've also got to look at the youths today (I don't mean to sound like an old man, I'm only 17 myself). But there are a lot of "chavs" and people who think they belong on the street who'd rather hang out spraying graffiti, shoplift, carry knives and get into gang crimes. They think that is their norm, because they are from a council estate or because they feel they must live up to their stereotypes of what they think society deems them to be like. An element to blame for this, I think, is the music, film/TV & games. It's not mystery that when you get on a bus and see a load of teenagers at the back of the bus, hoods up, heads down, music blaring from their phones it's all that grimey stuff about murder, bitches, hoes, drugs ect. People don't like to hear this, but there are people who are influenced by it.

It is a great shame.

But this is a minority. In today's world there are more teenagers in school, learning about the world, more teenagers read, more teenagers pay attention to current affairs (by way of music sometimes [refer to Lowkey]). It's encouraging, but the system is still broken. More needs to be done to stop teenagers thinking they belong on the streets and not in school.

Just for example, look at what happened to hip hop music : right now the rappers just know few words "bitch", "n*gga" and "fuck", and their lyrics don't mean anything. But back in the days it was a real poetry...

And when you surf on the internet you notice that more and more peoples don't know to write correctly...

Even in the real life, peoples don't know to speak correctly... And unfortunatly the problem isn't about the general knowledge, but just about the knowledge and education (I mean basic knowledges, like the grammar and orthography).

The sad thing is, is that you're absolutely right. Not necessarily about the internet thing though - a lot of people typing "you're" takes too long and instead just put "your." Its simple laziness.

But there are of course people who don't know their "there, they're and theirs," "your and you're" and so on. Probably again down to laziness, or a flawed education. I agree there is not enough emphasis on grammar, punctuation and syntax these days. Some people don't even know what the hell a hyphen is and call it a dash! And the concept of colons and semicolons is often compared to nuclear physics or palaeontology. Very sad indeed. I think that English language lessons should be compulsory throughout education, from 4 to 18, in all English-speaking countries, French in all French-speaking countries and so on and so forth.

Your excellent English also raises a point. I don't think enough is done in Britain at encouraging the study of foreign languages. I speak a little French because I studied it for five years because it was compulsory at my lower and upper secondary schools, and I would be studying it still now if it wasn't for the lure of my other three subjects (which I greatly enjoy doing). Again, foreign language lessons should also be compulsory in my view!

The big divide in youth is between those who want to learn and those who don't. After a career spent in teaching I am now lucky in that I now only

teach those who want to improve. My sympathy goes to those attempting to teach the unwilling learners.

In my opinion it is as a result of our declining society's standards.
