SeanO 7
LinkChelsea agree Maribor dealThe English champions travelled to Slovenia and quickly came to an agreement with the club.Maribor director of sport Zlatko Zahovic explained at a press conference that an accord was swiftly secured with the Stamford Bridge side.Zahovic explained that Chelsea had been impressed by Maribor's production of young players, with Josip Ilicic and Armin Bacinovic having recently been sold to Palermo."They came in Maribor and presented the request for co-operation between the clubs," revealed Zahovic"When I asked why exactly our club, I was very surprised. They knew everything about our club. They also specially underlined some players, whom they belive can reach the highest level."Their scouting service has come to the conclusion that our club deserves special attention because of our work with young players."Examples such as Ilicic, Bacinovic, Dejan Skolnik, Rene Mihelic, Miral Samardzic and others are proof that we are a club who works best with young players in this part of Europe."Maribor is a guarantee of success in the eyes of Chelsea. And of course it is great honour that Chelsea came to us and not the other way around as is usually the case."Chelsea was really interested in us. They had all the information about our players. I'm sure that in the future someone from Maribor will wear a Chelsea shirt."This is special thing for our club and also Slovenian football. We look forward to working together with Chelsea."Sounds Interesting.
Madmax 9,219
Interesting indeed. But what's the deal like? Do we have a first option on young players? Or a system whereby we can send players on loan?
LDN Blue 7,903
Sounds like a system we'd have with Vitesse. A choice for loaning out our players + potential "dibs" on their young prospects

OReillyD36 311
Smart move on our part, considering the amount of great prospects emerging from the balkan region lately e.g Jovetic, Pjanic, Krhin etc.
sLOVEnian Blue 74
This is a very important step for Slovenian football and I think both clubs will benefit from this agreement. One day I hope to see a Slovenian player in blue and it could happen sooner than you think. Maribor has some great talents ... just recently they sold Bacinovic and Ilicic to Palermo and they are both playing great for the Italian team. In future I expect players like Rajko Rep, Robert Berič and maybe Etien Velikonja to be sold for nice figures from Maribor to big European clubs. Maribor is the biggest club from Slovenia and one of the biggest and best organised in the whole Balkan. They have a fierce rivalry with the capital club Olimpija Ljubljana (which is a team I support ) so I don't like them very much but I must admit that Maribor are 2 levels ahead of every club in 1. slovenian league. EskWeston 696
These types of deals are very important, the main goal of this from Chelsea's perspective is to bring over to us the most talented players from their academy. For their part they get the chance to gain some knowledge from the coaches and the set up at Chelsea.
Styles 9,790
Great! That part of the world is actually producing some very good young players so hopefully we might get lucky with one or two young players.
NattyBlue 44
If this was Utd making the deal, the press would be all over it talking about how United, kings of England have tried to improve football all over europe...But OT: glad that we've done this, I agree on it being similar to Vitesse, all well and good really, dibs on players and the club get an insight on ours, no harm done
