Pele's daughter, Kely Nascimento, says he'll spend Christmas in hospital. The Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein confirm Pele's cancer has progressed and "requires greater care related to renal and cardiac dysfunctions". Get well soon,

In many places, esp in Brazil, the word "Pele" is used as an adjective.

Assuming you know your music... for me the best way to think about this is, Pele was Sebastian Bach. Who is Mozart (Messi for me eh) or Beethoven? that's very personal. Pele changed the game and popularized it. Yes, FIFA benefitted tremendously and used him quite a bit, which does not make his feat any smaller.

As a player, very little else to be said. Just read about his life, his accomplishments, and do watch videos. Yes, the game was a lot slower then, but it was slower for everyone--not just him.

Comparing decades is difficult and pointless. What needs to be said is that he was decades ahead of his time with what he could do on the ball. Much like Di Stefano.

An icon that transcends the sport itself.

I remember reading that wars would stop to watch Pele play.

It's hard to say who was the best as many people say different ages, style of game and such.

To me, the best futbol I have ever seen was Ronaldinho. I don't consider Ronaldinho in the same bracket as Maradona, Messi, Pele, BUT I have never seen a player play the way Ronaldinho did in that short time span, he was just too good.

That was the best futbol I ever seen from a player, ever.

agreed. That was precisely my point with the music analogy: it's always evolving... carriages to cars (sorry 😅).

PELE IN GREECE

Let's remember a funny story of the departed, as is the custom.
It's about the famous Olympiakos - Santos 2-1 of 1961, which was made into a song by the bouzouki master Giorgos Zambetas.
What happened then ?
Santos had been touring Europe where they gave a thrashing to all the known European giants of the time:
Real Madrid, Benfica, Inter, Juventus ...
They also came to Greece for just one game, against AEK Athens and Santos won by 3-0.
But the Greek association managed to convince the Brazilians to play one more, against Panathinaikos and Santos again won by 3-2.
After this they all went to the beach, Asteras-Glyfada, to spend a couple of days and then fly to Brazil.
The players were swimming all day and the consumption of beer was breaking a record.
But at this point the agents convinced the Santos team to play one more, against Olympiakos of Piraeus !
The players were clueless about it and did not understand what was going on.
So they were pulled out of the water by force.
Pele after consuming lots of beer was sound asleep.
Someone pressed his tummy with his finger to wake him up and a beer jet came out and hit the ceiling, or so the ancient employees of EOT Asteras-Glyfada relate.
So they were all taken on stretchers to the stadium to play with Olympiakos and lost 2-1.
Also the referee of the match favoured Olympiakos by sending off one of the Santos players (Coutinho) and Santos finished with ten men,
