Sky sources: West Brom’s Nicolas Anelka walks out of training and tells staff he is retiring

Chris Lepkowski @chrislepkowski 1m

Nicolas Anelka left #wba training ground this morning. Had meeting with Garlick, packed bags, left. Major doubts over future.

Assured there was NO bust-up - Anelka decision (whatever that will ultimately be) is based on either football/personal matter

Nicolas Anelka leaves West Bromwich Albion and could retire from football completely

Apparently...

Chris Lepkowski @chrislepkowski 17m

It has been suggested that Anelka's walk-out based on a personal matter. Wait and see until #wba say more at this stage

#wba confirm that Anelka will not be involved in Saturday’s game. The club have excused the striker from club duty on compassionate grounds.

#wba insist Anelka has NOT retired. I understand his agent has died - which has hit him badly. What the future holds, we'll see

Julien Laurens @LaurensJulien 4h

Just spoke to Anelka's agent (who obv is not dead!) One of NA closest friend died last week. He is not retiring but wont be involved on Sat.

Anything can always happen with Anelka but I was told again that he is not retiring but is hurt and down after the death of his friend.

  • 4 months later...

Was that Quenelle salute he did after he scored really some kind of new Nazi symbol, or is the media going crazy by itself again?

It's not Nazi, it's Anti-Zionist. He'll get a big fine for it, probably.

More info about the situation. I don't if you remember when Kalou scored a goal he did did a celebrations of covering his eyes & received a penalty from the FA? I do believe no political celebrations are allowed in League matches. Supposedly Anelka didn't realize it was an anti-Semitic gesture. I guess Anelka is friend's w/ French comedian Dieudonne M'bala M'bala, who used the symbol in a comedy routine in France.
